    3-8)

    information)
  • NRT Assessment

4
Transition Whats New for Kentucky?
  • Kentucky Alternate Portfolio
  • Link to grade level content standards
  • Annual submission
  • Separate scores for Reading, Mathematics
    Science
  • WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and
    Assessment)
  • Screener for identifying Limited English
    Proficient students
  • ACCESS for monitoring English language
    acquisition
  • Other Assessments Related Items
  • End-of-Course pilot in high school math by 2008
    (HB 197)
  • Individual Learning Plan replaces Individual
    Graduation Plan

5
New KCCT Design
  • In an attempt to hold the line on testing time
but still emphasizing open-response (OR) items,
the new design has more multiple-choice (MC)
    items and fewer OR items.
  • Half the common items will be released each year
and some matrix items occasionally, if needed to
    thoroughly demonstrate the content area.
  • The desire is to return images of student work on
the released items quickly to schools for
    analysis.

6
New KCCT Design
  • For KCCT reading, mathematics, science
  • and social studies
  • 2006 6 operational ORs, plus 1 pretest OR
  • 2007 4 operational ORs and 1 pretest OR
  • 2006 24 operational MC, plus 4 pretest
  • 2007 32 operational MC plus 4 pretest

7
New KCCT Design
  • An individual student testing in Mathematics,
Science and Social Studies will answer 36
multiple-choice items and 5 open response items
    in a content area.
  • Items are based on passages in Reading and vary
    slightly in number.

8
New KCCT Design
  • Practical Living/Vocational Studies (PL/VS) has
moved from grades 5 8 to 4 7 and the test
design currently assesses PL/VS using only
    multiple-choice items
  • On-demand writing has moved from grades 4 7 to
5 8. Students will respond to one 60 minute
prompt and answer multiple-choice items about
    editing and revision skills

9
New KCCT Design
  • Writing assessments will be scored using an
analytic scoring guide. Cluster leaders will be
trained this summer on the new scoring guide
  • On-demand writing for the 12th grade will be
tested in fall (Nov. 13-17, 2006). Students will
respond to two prompts--one direct (like in the
past with a choice of two scenarios and students
respond to one) and one text- based prompt.

10
New for Writing (KCCT and Portfolio)
  • Writing assessments will be scored using an
analytic scoring guide. Cluster leaders are being
trained this summer on the new scoring guide.
  • There have been regulatory changes regarding
administration and development of the Writing
    Portfolio.

11
Norm-Referenced Tests (NRT)
  • The NRT at 3rd grade will be optional and may be
given at any time during the year. For districts
that use NRTs to assist with gifted/talented
identification, KDE will pay for two content
    areas likely reading and mathematics.
  • The NRT at 6th grade is all multiple-choice items
and will be administered in the fall, September
18-29, 2006. Results will be compared against
fall norms. Testing will include reading and
    mathematics.
  • No testing of the NRT in 9th grade

12
Readiness Exams
  • EXPLORE at grade 8 and PLAN at grade 10 as
    predictive assessments included in March
    contracts.Testing begins in Fall 2006.
  • Senate Bill 130 requires EXPLORE and PLAN as well
as ACT and WorkKeys be in place no later than
    2007-08 school year.
  • ACT will be administered at state expense to all
    11th graders.
  • WorkKeys will be provided as an optional test for
10th, 11th, or 12th graders at state expense.
  • SB 130 addresses assessments, accommodations,
    reporting, student interventions with remediation
and accelerated learning plans, cost, alignment
and reduction of items on KCCT, and advice.
  • Among the assessments required in SB 130, ACT has
the greatest requirements for test administration
    and accommodation.

13
Instructional Implications
  • Promote the role of DOK as a classroom
    instructional guide.
  • Emphasize that the Program of Studies reflects
the expectation that the depth of instruction and
student learning should be at a DOK level 4.
  • Prepare students to perform on the assessment
whether at a DOK Level 2 or 3 by using DOK 4 as
    the goal for instruction.
  • Expose teachers to training and experience with
    DOK.
  • Use content and DOK to model best practices for
    instruction and assessment.
  • Focus schools on required curricular goals
(Program of Studies) beyond what is targeted for
    assessment (Core Content for Assessment).
  • Make the curriculum decisions that are best for
    students.

14
Instructional ToolsKDE website

New Alternate Portfolio
16
Federal Requirements
  • An Alternate Assessment must be given at the same
grade levels and in the same content areas as the
    general assessments.

17
KYs alternate assessment must be
  • Linked to grade level content expectations
  • Reported at the same time with the same
performance levels (N,A,P,D) and detail as the
    general assessment, e.g.
  • Reading,
  • Mathematics,
  • Science.

18
Training for Teachers
  • Begin in September 2006
  • Regional Trainings
  • University of Kentucky will conduct the trainings
    with the support of KDE
