Word Origin of Hospitality

• Host derived from the Latin hostis (enemy).
• Guest derived from hospes (hospital).
• A hospital was originally a house of
  entertainment for pilgrims, and the duty of
  hospitallers was to provide pilgrims with
  hospitium (lodging and entertainment).
