  • Depending upon the structure of the grant,
    Postdocs may or may not be considered an employee
    of the University.
  • If a question exists about your employment status
    or your appointment, you or your department
    should check with the Office of Sponsored
    Research or the Office of the Vice Provost for
    Research.

  • The majority of you are considered employees.
  • If the Postdoc is not considered an employee they
    are not considered benefits eligible.
  • If the Postdoc is considered an employee and
    meets the criteria of being benefits eligible
    (will work over 1,000 hours in one year) they are
    entitled to participate in the Rice Benefit Plan.

  • In the case of a Postdoc not being an employee
    they are eligible to participate in the
    MethodistCare HMO at University Rates.
  • If the Postdoc is an employee all standard
    benefit registration procedures are in place
  • Enrollment MUST be completed within 31 days of
    employment.

  • Retirement 1 year vesting, defined contribution
    plan, access to funds is governed by the criteria
    in the plan.

  • Benefit Time
  • If the Postdoc is considered an employee they are
    entitled to benefit time. (combination of
    vacation and sick). You must complete a Time and
    Attendance Form.
  • Benefit time for Postdocs accrues at a rate of
    1.75 days per month.

  • Benefit Time
  • It is expected that Postdocs will not carry over
    benefit time from one year to another.
  • If the Postdoc is supported by a grant with
    defined start and end date, benefit time must be
    used within the defined time of the grant.
