Nature Facts about Michigan
  • State Flower- The apple blossom. Sponsors noted
    it was one of the most fragrant and beautiful
    flowered species of apple.
  • State Tree- The white pine. It was chosen as a
    symbol of one of Michigans greatest industries.
  • State Stone- The Petoskey stone. It is
    fossilized coral that existed in the northern
    Lower Peninsula about 350 million years ago.
  • State Gem- The chlorastrolite. This gem is also
    known as the Isle Royale greenstone.

Animal facts about Michigan
  • State Bird- The American robin. Sponsors called
    the robin the best-known and best-loved of all
    the birds.
  • State Fish- The trout. In 1988, it was specified
    to the BROOK TROUT as the state fish.
  • State Reptile- The painted turtle. This was
    named in 1995 by a fifth grade class who
    discovered that Michigan did not have a state
    reptile.

  • The state flag was adopted in 1911.
  • It this is the third state flag since Michigan

  • The flag we have today is a field of blue with
    the state coat of arms at its center.

Michigan's Nicknames
  • The main nickname that is well known is The Great
    Lakes State. The reason behind it is because we
    are surrounded by 5 great lakes.
  • The second nickname is The Wolverine State. One
    of the stories behind this is because the Native
    Americans compared the Michigan settlers to
    wolverines.
