Title: The Selling of our Evangelical Birthright

1
The Selling of our Evangelical Birthright
  • Hebrews 1216

Presented by Bob DeWaay March 5, 2006
2
Esaus Sin Was So Grievous Because it Showed
Disregard for Gods Covenant Promises
  • Hebrews 1216
  • that there be no immoral or godless person like
Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single
    meal.

3
Understanding Esaus Sin as Described in Hebrews
1216
  • Esau was Immoral in the figurative OT sense of
    being unfaithful to the covenant.
  • godless is bebe_los in the Greek which means
    secular or Irreligious
  • Esau was a secular covenant despiser because he
gave up what had great eternal value for what had
    only temporal value, a meal.

4
The Blood Atonement is Our Glorious, Evangelical
Birthright
  • Hebrews 1019, 20
  • Since therefore, brethren, we have confidence to
enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a
new and living way which He inaugurated for us
through the veil, that is, His flesh,

5
The Blood Atonement is the Only Way to Draw Near
to God
  • Hebrews 1021, 22
  • and since we have a great priest over the house
of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in
full assurance of faith, having our hearts
sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our
    bodies washed with pure water.

6
Believers Have Confidence in the Blood Atonement
  • Hebrews 1023
  • Let us hold fast the confession of our hope
without wavering, for He who promised is faithful

7
Modern Evangelicalism has Sold Their Birthright
for Mystical Stew Building Confidence Through
Mysticism
  • Through Subjectivism (not Biblical)
  • Through Mystical Spiritual Formation Practices
    (not Biblical)
  • Through Yoga (not Biblical)
  • Through Visualization Techniques and Cataphatic
    Prayer (not Biblical)
  • Through Dream Interpretation (not Biblical)

8
The Reason for the Sell Out is a Failure of
Faith a Lack of Confidence in the Sufficiency of
Christs Atonement
  • Hebrews 111
  • Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,
the conviction of things not seen.
  • Mystical practices give people a more tangible
religious experience, making them feel closer to
    God.
  • The blood atonement was provided once for all and
cannot be seen, faith is needed.

9
Covenant Birthright Being Near To God
  • Hebrews 725
  • Hence, also, He is able to save forever those
who draw near to God through Him, since He always
lives to make intercession for them.

10
Pot of Stew Feeling Near To God
  • Hebrews 101
  • For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the
good things to come and not the very form of
things, can never by the same sacrifices year by
year, which they offer continually, make perfect
    those who draw near.

11
Covenant Birthright Inspired Scripture
  • Hebrews 11, 2
  • God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in
the prophets in many portions and in many ways,
in these last days has spoken to us in His Son,
whom He appointed heir of all things, through
whom also He made the world.

13
Covenant Birthright Hearing and Obeying
  • Hebrews 37, 8
  • Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, Today
if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts
as when they provoked Me, As in the day of trial
    in the wilderness

14
Pot of StewFailure to Listen (obey)
  • Hebrews 312
  • Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any
one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling
    away from the living God.

15
Failing to Listen to Christs Words is Worse than
Failing to Listen to Moses
  • Hebrews 1225
  • See to it that you do not refuse Him who is
speaking. For if those did not escape when they
refused him who warned them on earth, much less
shall we escape who turn away from Him who warns
    from heaven.

16
The Covenant Birthright Freedom From Satans
Tyranny
  • Hebrews 214, 15
  • Since then the children share in flesh and
blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the
same, that through death He might render
powerless him who had the power of death, that
is, the devil and might deliver those who
through fear of death were subject to slavery all
    their lives.

through the eternal Spirit offered Himself
without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience
from dead works to serve the living God?

The Covenant Birthright Access in Prayer to the
Throne of Grace
  • Hebrews 415, 16
  • For we do not have a high priest who cannot
sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has
been tempted in all things as we are, yet without
sin. Let us therefore draw near with confidence
to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy
and may find grace to help in time of need.

  • Let us hold fast the confession of our hope
without wavering, for He who promised is
faithful and let us consider how to stimulate
one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking
our own assembling together, as is the habit of
some, but encouraging one another and all the
more, as you see the day drawing near.

And He scourges every son whom He receives. It is
for discipline that you endure God deals with
you as with sons for what son is there whom his
    father does not discipline?

  • Taking Oaths
  • Voluntary Poverty

26
Once the Birthright is Sold, The Covenant
Blessings Are Lost
  • Hebrews 1216, 17
  • that there be no immoral or godless person like
Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single
meal. For you know that even afterwards, when he
desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected,
for he found no place for repentance, though he
    sought for it with tears.

27
The Covenant Blessings are the Promises of
Messianic Salvation
  • Hebrews 1222, 23
  • But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city
of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to
myriads of angels, to the general assembly and
church of the first-born who are enrolled in
heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the
spirits of righteous men made perfect,

28
The Covenant Blessings are the Promises of
Messianic Salvation
  • Hebrews 1224
  • and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,
and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better
    than the blood of Abel.

29
The Covenant Blessings are the Promises of
Messianic Salvation
  • Hebrews 1228, 29
  • Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which
cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which
we may offer to God an acceptable service with
reverence and awe for our God is a consuming
    fire.
