CalvinismPerseverance of the Saints
This doctrine does not stand alone but is a
necessary part of the Calvinistic system of
theology. The doctrines of Election and
irresistible grace logically imply the certain
salvation of those who receive these blessings.
If God has chosen men absolutely and
unconditionally to eternal life, and if His
Spirit applies to them the benefits of
redemption, the inescapable conclusion is that
these persons shall be saved. And, historically,
this doctrine has been held by all Calvinists.
(Loraine Goettner, The Reformed Doctrine of
Predestination, p 182)
6
1 Tim. 24 God desires all men to be saved and
to come to the knowledge of the truth. 2 Pet.
39 God is not willing that any should perish
but that all should come to repentance. Acts
1034 God is not one to show partiality, but
in every nation the man who fears Him and does
what is right is welcome to Him.
7
Irresistible Grace
  • Irresistible Grace-Means that when God
undertakes to save a person by his grace or
unmerited favor, that grace is invincible. Even
in making every effort, a person could not refuse
it. Therefore no credit should be due for
    accepting it.
  • (Presbyterians, Their History and Beliefs, Walter
    Lingle, p.36)

8
Calvinism
  • Irresistible Grace
  • Man is so depraved that it takes a special
working of the Holy Spirit to regenerate him and
cause him to be born again. This working is
irresistible because he has been unconditionally
    elected to be saved.

9
Calvinism
  • Irresistible Grace
  • A man is not saved because he believes in
Christ he believes in Christ because he is
    saved.
  • - Lorraine Boettner, The Reformed Doctrine of
    Predestination

10
Calvinism
  • Irresistible Grace
  • This effectual call is of Gods free and special
grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in
man, who is altogether passive therein, until,
being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit,
he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to
embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it.
  • - Presbyterian Confession of Faith

Can Grace Be Resisted?
  • Bible Answers
  • Gods grace is something in which one must
    continue (Acts 1343).
  • Gods grace can be received in vain (II
    Corinthians 61).
  • Gods grace is something from which one may fall.
    (Galatians 59).

12
Can Grace Be Resisted?
  • Bible Answers
  • Gods grace is something in which one can choose
to be strong (II Timothy 21).
  • Gods grace empowers man only in the sense that
it is something that teaches man (Titus 211).

13
Does Man Have The Free Will To Refuse God?
  • Proverbs 124 Because I have called and you
refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one
    regarded,
  • Proverbs 129 Because they hated knowledge And
did not choose the fear of the LORD,

14
Does Man Have The Free Will To Refuse God?
  • Acts 751

ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit as your
    fathers did, so do you.

15
Does Man Have The Free Will To Refuse God?
  • Joshua 2415
  • And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD,
choose for yourselves this day whom you will
serve, whether the gods which your fathers served
that were on the other side of the River, or the
gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.
But as for me and my house, we will serve the
    LORD."

16
Does Man Have The Free Will To Refuse God?
  • 2 Peter 39
  • 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise,
as some count slackness, but is longsuffering
toward us, not willing that any should perish but
that all should come to repentance.

17
Does Man Have The Free Will To Refuse God?
  • 1 Timothy 23-4
