Title: GIS database management for planning of Hydel Power Generation

1
GIS database management for planning of Hydel
Power Generation
  • Ashok Kumar Sinha
  • Professor of Instrumentation and Control Engg.
  • And
  • Surekha Dudhani
  • Assistant Professor of Electrical Engg.
  • Bharati Vidyapeeths College of Engineering
  • A-4, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi-63

2
Hydel Power
  • Renewable, non-radioactive non-polluting source
    of Energy
  • Reliable high available Energy Source
  • Low cost of generation, operation maintenance
  • Inherent ability for quick starting, stopping
    instantaneous load acceptance/ rejection
  • Best choice for meeting peak load

3
Rise Decline of Hydro share in India
4
Constraint for slow down of the Hydro development
  • Technical Difficult inadequate investigation
  • Financial Large scale time over run
  • Heavy escalation
    Inadequacy of fund allotment
  • Geological surprises
  • Tariff related issues
  • Delay in land acquisition
  • Resettlement of project affected families

5
Development of GIS in Knowledge-Base environment
  • Remote Sensing Image Processing
  • GIS database
  • Knowledge based expert system

6
Remote Sensing Image Processing
  • Remote sensing refers to practice of
interpretation manipulation of data about the
earths surface (or near to surface) collected
from satellite platforms above the Earths
    atmosphere
  • Satellite data so collected has wide range of
applications. Land use Land cover mapping is
    one of them.
  • Remote sensing analysis of the land cover of
commonwealth can give correct information about
the quantity, quality spatial distribution of
    the natural resources.

7
Remote sensing Image Processing
  • Collected satellite data are used in many forms
format to extract useful information using
    digital or manual techniques.
  • Infrared False Color Composite (FCC) images are
one of the most widely used data format for
    information extraction.
  • Most of the conventional digital Image Processing
techniques are based on features like pattern,
color, shape, size, shadow, texture and tonal
variation of each pixel in the image

8
GIS data-base
9
Knowledge based Expert system
10
Proposed Methodology GIS data base management
for Hydro Power generation
  • Source identification
  • Site selection
  • Environmental planning
  • Digital Terrain Model (DTM) data
  • Transmission line network
  • Ranking of the site

11
Source Identification
  • Remote sensing technology is an effective tool
for Identification of Hydel source especially in
    the inaccessible area like Himalayas
  • Land water features can be discernable
  • Most of the meteorological data, aerial
    climatographical data are obtained interpreted
with the help of GIS in knowledge base
    environment.

12
Site Selection
  • Study of Geological lithologies, water drainage
    pattern, surface subsurface structure
  • The geological Structural configuration to
understand strength weakness of the area
  • Satellite imaginary for identification of
    Catchment boundary, drainage network, peripheral
    stresses, land use ,forestation vegetation
    cover
  • xxxxxxx

13
Environmental Planning
  • Catchment area treatment
  • Aforestation
  • Rehabilitation resettlement
  • Fisheries potential
  • Recreation tourism potential

14
Digital Terrain Model (DTM)
  • Computation of slope
  • Channel length
  • Catchment area
  • Head available for power generation
  • Location of sites for civil structure

15
Transmission Line Network
  • Alternative shortest route from the generating
    station to load centre
  • Topological geographical nature of the terrains
  • Physical constrains ( railway crossing, road
crossing, expansion of villages towns, etc.)
  • Environmental factors ( reserved forests high
tree areas, national parks wild life
    sanctuaries etc.)
  • Soil condition
  • costing

16
Ranking of Sites
  • CEA has undertaken Ranking study to have a shelf
of prioritized schemes for further investigation
    implementation of hydro sites considering
    technical non-technical criteria
  • Detailed Ranking study is carried out considering
submergence, land use aspects, broad geological
    economic considerations
  • Image analysis of satellite data creating
spatial geo-reference information of terrain ,
using GIS tools provide basis to address
review the indices in the Ranking study faster
    than the traditional method

17
Tools
  • Hydra-HP
  • DHI
  • ERDAS Imagine
  • E-Tap
  • MIKE BASIN
  • ROLTAS
  • ARC view 3.x., ARC view 3d Analysis
  • ORACLE
