Respectable Sins
2
Its About Sin in the Body
  • This series is about subtle sin among believers
    in the church ungodliness, unthankfulness,
    pride, etc.
  • I am not free of these sins.
  • Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
  • Matthew 71, NIV

Review God Judges All Sin
  • We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us
has turned to his own way and the Lord has laid
on him the iniquity of us all.
  • Isaiah 536 NIV
  • The most important reason why sin is very, very
bad is because it was put on Jesus on the cross.

4
Review Good News Two Promises in 1 John 19
  • But if we confess our sins to him, he is
faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
    cleanse us from all wickedness.
  • He forgives our sins
  • He cleanses us from our sins

Respectable Sins
  • The Weeds of Anger

6
How We Normally Handle Anger
  • We get angry, and then we get over it.
  • Sometimes we apologize to the one we were angry
    at sometimes we do not.
  • The other person eventually gets over being the
object of anger, and life gets back to normal.
  • The relationship is scarred or weakened, but the
    situation is tolerable.
  • Weeds grow in the relationship.

7
Ephesians 431
  • Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger,
brawling and slander, along with every form of
    malice.
  • NIV

8
Colossians 38
  • But now you must rid yourselves of all such
things as these anger, rage, malice, slander,
and filthy language from your lips.
  • NIV

9
2 Corinthians 1220b
  • I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy,
outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip,
    arrogance and disorder.
  • NIV

10
Ephesians 426-27
  • 26 In your anger do not sin Do not let the sun
go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not
    give the devil a foothold.
  • NIV
  • Stop the weeds of anger from growing while
    they are still small.

Growth of the Weeds
  • Resentment Anger that you hold on to
  • Bitterness Resentment grown into ongoing
    animosity
  • Hostility Bitterness that can no longer be
    hidden
  • Hate Hostility that grows into dreaming and
    planning harm
  • Strife Hate that has grown into open war

13
(Un)Glory
  • Resentment and bitterness in the church family
  • Hostility or Strife in the church family
  • Biological families
  • Our self-righteous words and actions in response
to perceived wrongs contribute to the growth of
    the weeds!

14
Romans 1219-21
  • 19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave
room for Gods wrath, for it is written It is
mine to avenge I will repay, says the Lord. 20
    On the contrary
  • If your enemy is hungry, feed him
  • if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
  • In doing this, you will heap burning coals on
    his head.
  • 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil
    with good. NIV

what is now being done, the saving of many
    lives.
  • Genesis 5019-20 NIV

23
The Unmerciful Servant
  • Matthew 1821-35
  • Forgiven 10,000 talents A talent was worth 6000
    denarii
  • This is 200,000 years worth of wages!
  • 6-8 billion today
  • Refused to forgive 100 denarii about 4 months
    wages (15-20 thousand today)

24
Interpreting the Parable
  • The large sum forgiven represents our moral and
    spiritual debt to God
  • The damage we have done to Gods glory is
    enormous!
  • Example spilled ink it matter what you spill
    it on!
  • What did Gods forgiveness cost?
  • Even months worth of wages is small, in
comparison the sin others do against us!

25
Perspective on Forgiveness
  • Acknowledge that we have been forgiven more than
    we could ever forgive!
  • Each of us is the 10,000 talent debtor.
  • Keep this always in mind.
  • Then, we can forgive because we realize how much
    God has forgiven us.

26
Killing the Weeds
  • Trust the sovereignty and power of God.
  • Pray to grow in love.
  • Forgive as God forgave.

27
