9Two mark questions
- What is worship? 2
- Worship is giving honour and praise to God. It
means to give God what he is worth, that is our
honour.
10State two of the Sacraments of initiation on to
the Catholic Church.
11Why is baptism important for Christians?
- Being baptised means that one had obeyed the
commands of Jesus. The ceremony welcomes a
Christian into the Church and s/he becomes part
of the Body of Christ. Through this sacrament,
Original Sin is cleansed.
12Give the names of two oils used during the Rite
of Baptism
- Oil of Catechumens
- Oil of Chrism
13Explain why rings are exchanged during the Rite
of Marriage.
- Rings are exchanged as a sign of the couples
life long love and fidelity to one another. It
is a sign to society of exclusivity this couple
will be monogamous in their relationship.
14State two actions performed by a priest during
the Catholic burial rite.
- Incensing, sprinkling the coffin with water,
scattering of soil etc..
15What is a bishop in the Catholic Church?
- He is the head of the Diocese and successor to
the apostles
16Why is the Pope also called the Vicar of Christ?
- The Pope is the representative of Christ on
earth. He is the head of the church based on
Christs commission.
17Why is the Bible sacred to Christians?
- The Bible is sacred because it is the inspired
Word of God. Through reading the Bible a Catholic
can find out the way in which God wants him/ her
to live a good Christian life.
18What is the soul ?
- The soul is the spiritual, immortal part of a
human being.
19Explain what Catholics understand by Heaven.
- Heaven is the perfect and final completion of
human life in union with God. It is a spiritual
state of being where the saved will see God as
God truly is.
20What is meant by the Apostolic Succession?
- The inheritance of authority from Jesus to the
apostles which is passed down through generations
of leaders to the present day. Thus the Bishops
who rule the church today have inherited the
right to leadership which Jesus conferred on the
Apostles. This passed down through the laying on
of hands at the Rite of ordination.
21What is a Religious Order?
- A Religious Order is a name given to a
community of men or women who live by a
particular rule and in which solemn vows are
professed
22What is the role of a Catholic Priest in the
parish?
- A Catholic priest is ordained to preach the Word
of God, to celebrate the Sacraments and to offer
the sacrifice of the Mass. He also provides
pastoral assistance and guidance.
23State two examples of prejudice.
24What is discrimination?
- Acting upon ones prejudices
25Three mark questions
- Why is Confirmation important for Catholics?
Confirmation is very important as it confirms to
the church that the person has taken on board the
promises made on his her behalf at Baptism. S/he
is in effect saying that s/he now wants to be
fully committed as a Catholic. The sacrament will
effectively bring about Gods grace in that
person and a gifting of the Holy Spirit. It is
also an important way to witness to others.
26What is meant by an informed conscience?
- It means that one has consulted various sources
of authority, eg scripture, reason, Church
teaching, and prayed before making a moral
choice.
27Briefly explain what sin is.
- The word sin literally means to miss the mark
For a Catholic this means to fall short of the
perfection of God. No one is perfect so all have
sinned. Catholics believe that sin can be both
Mortal and Venial.
28What are the three vows taken by members of
Religious Orders?
- Poverty
- Chastity
- Obedience.
29Explain why the Catholic Church supports Natural
Family Planning.
- The Catholic Church teaches that every sexual
act should be open to procreation. So then
Natural Family Planning does not hinder
procreation to the extent that artificial methods
do. The Church would suggest that whilst the
couple should be open to procreation, responsible
parenting is also encouraged. This would mean
that the couple plan their family but using
natural methods, which are more in line with
Natural Law.
30How Catholics can live the Mass in their daily
lives?
- A Catholic can live the mass by fulfilling the
commandments of Christ love the Lord with all
their heart and all their mind and to love ones
neighbour as oneself. Loving God could involve
prayer and worship, loving ones neighbour could
involve actively helping those in need through
becoming involve in charity work etc. also see
answer above
318 mark A01/2
- Explain what Catholics mean by (i) the sacrifice
of the Mass, and (ii) the Real Presence 8 - Think of these questions as two four mark
questions.
32Real Presence
- The bread and wine, when they re blessed by the
priest, become the body and Blood of Jesus
Christ. This is based on the words of Jesus at
the Last Supper. This is my body. This is my
blood . The Church call this change
Transubstantiation.
33Sacrifice
- Jesus sacrifice at Calvary is represented each
time Mass is celebrated. Those who believe and
participate in the Mass are able to receive the
Gods grace. By worshiping together the
congregation too make a sacrificial offering by
giving up their time and gifts.
34Evaluation 4 marks
- Catholic funerals must be times of hope and
joy - When a person has experienced the death of a
loved one there naturally has to be a time for
grieving and mourning the loss of a dear one.
This is a time of sadness.
35- The circumstances surrounding the death may be
tragic. How could anyone celebrate joyfully the
death of a child who has died in excruciating
pain at the hands of an abductor for instance? It
could be argued that funerals provide the
opportunity for this grieving to take place and
that it would be quite inappropriate for the
focus to be one of joy and celebrating
36- However, if the only focus of the funeral was on
sadness and grief, what hope would there be for
those who are left in their sorrows. There must
be a way in the funeral to give thanks for the
life of the deceased person, no matter how short,
and to remind those present of the promises of
Scripture. This is a means of bringing to those
present the hope of eternal life in the presence
of and almighty God who loves his children. It is
a time to be comforted by the conquering of death
by Christ the redeemer.
37- So there must be a respectful balance ,allowing a
time for grief but focusing on the belief that
death is not the end and looking forward to the
joy of eternal life.
388 marks
- Natural Family Planning is the best type of
family planning
39- Natural Family Planning is a method of birth
control which is in line with the Churchs
teaching on Natural Law. The teaching of the
Church states that every sexual act should be
open to procreation. Therefore, by not using
artificial or barrier methods, this teaching
would be observed by the couple. The Church also
teaches that sex, as a sign of the sacrament of
marriage, should take place within marriage. One
could also argue that a more accepted attitude of
artificial contraception has led to a more
promiscuous attitude in todays society, where
sex before marriage has become the norm rather
than the exception. There seems to be an
abundance of reasons against the use of
artificial contraception.
40- The couple should be willing to receive children
from God as they understood this to be a part of
the marriage contract. So one could argue that in
order to be a good Catholic, the Natural method
in the best form of contraception because it is
in line with Church teaching. One could also
argue from a medical viewpoint. The side effects
from artificial methods such as the oral
contraceptive pill can be serious. Some forms of
contraception could lead to the threat of
thrombosis or in some cases cervical cancer.
41- There are of course other risks. One could also
state that even in the light of modern scientific
developments there is not enough known about
artificial contraception. In many cases abortive
methods are used without the person fully
understanding the consequences of her actions.
42- However, in considering the case of a married
couple, who truly love each other and have
considered responsible parenting, Natural Family
Planning may not be the best method for them.
Whilst it promotes the bond between husband and
wife, it is still a method of contraception. If
the couple have dutifully completed their family
and will find that having more children will just
put pressure on them financially and emotionally,
are they not being more responsible by
controlling their family as best as they see fit.
43- N FP is not a highly successful method of
control. It involves an intricate understanding
of the way in which a womans body works and this
is not always as predictable as it may seem. One
also has to consider that using NFP limits when
the couple can express their sexual love for each
other. The Church has recognised the dual purpose
of love making and surely it is unreasonable for
a couple to wait for the infertile part of the
womans cycle before expressing love.
44- In my view, God made human beings to share in His
creative purposes but this involves careful
consideration of the consequences of ones
actions. Whilst I would not promote artificial
methods which could cause harm to oneself, or the
foetus, there are methods which control
conception and allow the union between husband
and wife when they naturally choose to make love.
