1An Expanded Look at Those Old John Deere Farm
Tractors with the Two-Cylinder Engines!
A Lyle V. Johnson Production February 10, 2014
2Introduction This slide show is an expanded
version of a similar John Deere Tractor show
which I prepared in 2012, and later revised on
June 26, 2013. Those earlier versions were both
entitled Remember Those Old John Deere Farm
Tractors with the Two-Cylinder Engines? This
is an update of those previous versions. Also,
this presentation includes more detail about
Deere Company, and its many models of those
two-cylinder engine farm tractors which were
built up until 1960. By Lyle V.

3First, let us begin with a few places worth a
visit, especially if you are a John Deere Fan!

9A closer look at John Deere's World Headquarters,
Moline, Illinois.
10 Yes. Deere Company opens the front door of
its World Headquarters for anyone to visit! A
display area is available there where you can
view old John Deere farm machinery as well as
some of the new. After a short preview of the
Headquarters display area, we will begin our
review about those old John Deere Farm Tractors
with the two-cylinder engines!

14John Deere's First Tractor In 1914, Deere
Company directed one of its engineers, Joseph
Dain Sr., to design and produce the company's
first farm tractor. The resulting all wheel
drive tractor was often referred to as the "Dain
Tractor". The first prototype was ready in 1915
and testing began with a Waukesha engine. That
first Dain tractor was found to be underpowered.
In 1917, a McVicker engine replaced the Waukesha
engine and the tractor was ready for production.
Deere ordered 100 tractors be produced by the end
of 1917. By the time that the final Dain
tractors were built in 1919, Deere Company had
already purchased the Waterloo Gasoline Tractor
Company. Although the Dain Tractor had
several features that were ahead of its time,
including a shift-on-the-move transmission, that
tractor was twice as expensive to built as is was
for Deere Company to continue production of the
Waterloo Boy. That ended the production of the
Dain Tractor by Deere Company.

16The Early Years Leading Up to Farm
Tractor Production by Deere Company!
The Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company had built
several Waterloo Boy Tractors before being
acquired by Deere Company in 1918. Two
Waterloo Boy Model L Tractors were built in
1914. 9,310 Waterloo Boy Model R Tractors were
built from 1914 to 1917. Deere Company
continued the production of 21,392 Waterloo Boy
Model N tractors from 1917 to 1924. In 1923,
Deere Company introduced its John Deere Model
D Tractor which continued in production for 30
years thereafter up to 1953.

23 This 1923 JD Model D was designed to burn
kerosene or other heavier fuels. Two fuel tank
caps protrude through the hood of this model.
To avoid confusion one was painted red for the
starting fuel (usually gasoline), and the other
was painted green for the regular fuel (kerosene
or what other heavier fuel).
24Restyling of the JD Model D came about in 1939.
This 1947 JD Model D has the styled appearance
for the JD Model D tractor.
25The John Deere General Purpose Tractors! JD
General Purpose (GP) tractors were first
introduced in 1928, and continued in production
up to 1935. The GP tractors were built in a
tricycle row crop tractor style and in a standard
4-wheel tractor style that was also claimed to
be a row crop tractor. Also, three popular JD
models evolved from the GP series of tractors
The GP Model A (2-14 plows) introduced in
1934. The GP Model B (2-12 plows) introduced
in 1935. The GP Model G (3-14 plows)
introduced in 1938.

104John Deere Diesel Engine Power! Diesel power
became increasingly important as the Deere
Company approached the end of two-cylinder
engines for its farm tractors, which was an era
that lasted more than fifty years. Of the JD
Model 730 tractors built, 70 were powered by
diesel engines. That is 7 out of every 10 JD
Model 730 tractors built. Also, by 1960, the
John Deere 730 diesel (along with the 720)
already held a 27-year fuel economy record for
the most efficient diesel tractor at the Nebraska
Tractor Test Laboratory. It is no wonder why
Deere Company went on to become a world-wide
manufacturer of even more powerful farm tractors,
starting in the 1960s, with its New Generation
of Power!
105The John Deere Magnificent Seven! The audio for

113Thanks for Watching! That concludes our slide
show about those old John Deere Tractors with the
two-cylinder engines. The underlying research
for this slide show was performed by me, Lyle V.
Johnson, utilizing photos and data readily
available from the internet using Google
Searches. More specifically, John Deere tractor
information and data were also available from a
web site entitled "TractorData.com". A
special thanks goes to William Perkins of
Millbrook, Illinois and Wayne Gargrave of
Friendswood, Texas for their assistance in this
project. By Lyle V. Johnson February 10, 2014
