Is There an Optimum Position for Hanging a
Radiator?
  • Today, its less important where we place the
radiator than it used to be. In the past, it made
sense to put the radiator in the coldest part of
the room, which was usually in front of the
window. This is because it warmed the cool air as
it came into the room. However, with the advent
of double-glazing and cavity wall insulation,
there is much less need to do this. Our houses
are so well insulated that position doesnt make
as much of a difference as it used to.
  • Nonetheless, there are a few things that you can
do to increase the efficiency of your radiators.
We are going to consider these things below.

Aluminium Radiators Radiators

How Many Radiators Do You Need?
  • In general, the larger the room, the more
radiators you will need. For a large living room,
for instance, its better to buy two smaller
radiators than one large one. This enables you to
place the radiator on opposite or adjacent walls,
and so create a more even heat distribution. Most
people in the trade recommend a radiator for
    every four-squaremetres.

5
Is a Horizontal Radiator Better than a Vertical
Radiator?
The answer to this question is that it depends.
From a purely efficient perspective, a horizontal
radiator is better because it provide a greater
amount of heat for the room. This is because hot
air rises, and so it has longer to reach the
ceiling than it would from a vertical radiator.
However, there are times when vertical radiators
are more appropriate. For example, in spaces
where there isnt a lot of wall space, but where
there is a need, nonetheless, for a certain sized
radiator.

The Radiator and The Ceiling
How Much Space Should There Be between the Top of
the Radiator and the Ceiling?
We touched upon this briefly above, but in
general you need a fair amount of space between
the ceiling and the top of the radiator. This
will allow the air to circulate through the room
via convection (radiators work through
convection, rather than radiation the term
radiator is a bit misleading!).
7
How Much Space Should from Top..
  • Below the radiator, there needs to be between
five and ten inches of space. This allows the
cool air to be drawn under the unit. Above the
unit, you need at least fifteen to twenty inches
to create a good circulation of air.
  •
  • The more responsive units, such as the aluminium
radiators, require less space above. This is
    because aluminium radiators are highly
conductive. They produce and emit a lot of heat
quickly. Therefore, if you have to use a vertical
radiator, and you dont have the fifteen to
twenty inch gap at the top, you can always adjust
for this, somewhat, by installing an aluminium
    radiator.

  • If in doubt about the best position for your
radiators, you can always seek the help of a
central heating specialist. They will be able to
advise you as to the best place to hang the
radiator, and the best radiator for your
requirements. Of course, you will usually have to
pay for this advice. In the long run, though,
their information can help you to save money on
your energy bills, so its well worth it.
