How to Drive Safely While Snowing
2
For most of the United States, snow is a given
during the winter months. Therefore, it is
critical that you know how to handle driving when
it is snowing out or when the roads are covered
in snow. What are some tips that you can keep in
mind to stay safe while driving in less than
ideal conditions?
3
Inspect Your Vehicle Before You Go Out If you
know that you will face inclement conditions, you
should make sure that your car is ready to handle
them. For instance, you should check your tires
to ensure that they are properly inflated as this
will improve stopping distance. You should also
ensure that your windshield wipers are in good
condition to keep your windshield clear from ice
and snow.
4
Drive at Speeds Safe for the Road
Conditions When it is snowing, or roads are
covered in snow or ice, you could be putting
yourself in danger even if you are at or below
the posted speed limit. If you feel your car
sliding on the road, you are going too fast.
Maintaining a reasonable speed will make it
easier to stop if necessary without getting into
a crash or going off of the road.
5
Don't Slam on Your Brakes The worst thing that
you can do when it is snowing out is to slam on
your brakes. This could cause your car to go into
a skid and cause an accident. If you do find that
your car is skidding, steer into the skid and
only apply light pressure to your brakes if you
apply any pressure at all.
6
Avoid Complete Stops Whenever Possible It takes
more effort to get your car moving again from a
complete stop in snowy conditions as opposed to
dry conditions. If possible, try to keep your car
inching forward at traffic lights or stop signs.
In some cases, trying to hit the gas after coming
to a complete stop will result in your wheels
spinning and your vehicle going nowhere.
7
Wait Until the Storm Passes Before Going Out The
best way to stay safe in snowy weather is just to
stay home until the snow stops. By waiting until
the roads have been plowed and treated, you make
it easier on yourself to get to your destination
safely and without incident. While snow may be
fun for skiers or kids looking for a day off from
school, it isn't something that a driver wants to
deal with. While it may be easier to avoid
driving during snowy weather, it may not always
be avoidable. Winterizing your car, driving
slowly and avoiding complete stops can help you
get where you need to go as safely as possible.
