Title: How to Write Big Band Music

How to Write Big Band Music
2
A sub-genre of jazz is the big band music. This
got a lot of attention during the 1930s and '40s.
For Big Band ensembles, many individual composers
as well as university music programs write music.
Requiring knowledge of music theory, writing Big
Band music can be difficult. Familiarity with
the range of pitch and volume of different
instruments, depending on the size of the
ensemble is also necessary. In front of a piano,
composing Big Band charts is the most efficient
method. Thus the music can be composed and played
at the same time.   Composing Big Band
Music   Write out the rhythm section parts the
bottom staff of your manuscript paper. The drums,
piano and bass in this melodic ensemble comprise
the rhythm section. On the bottom staffs of the
manuscript paper, write out the rhythm or groove
you'd like your drummer to play. Write out chord
symbols for each chord as well as the bass line
for the bassist on the staff above the bottom
staff. For the pianist does the same. The melody
line and chords on the staff should be written
above the bassist's part. The composition for
Marching Bands also has such method of music
writing.

Your lower horn parts, baritone sax and third
trumpets must be written in the section above
that. A main melody line on top of the rhythm
section parts is given by this, for your
composition in the previous step.   On the two
top staffs that are left on the manuscript paper,
write out your soprano saxophone, alto and first
and second trumpet parts. The main melodic line
that the listener will hear will be these melody
lines.   Any sections for solos must be written
on a following sheet of manuscript paper,
dedicating each staff to a particular instrument.
The number of measures for the soloist to play
should be noted down then.   Similarly, one can
also learn how to write a Marching Band music
composition.
