Thattekad has several vayals (marshes) bordering the Periyar and Idamalayar Rivers. A portion is submerged by the Bhoothathankettu Irrigation Dam. Around 250+ species of birds have been recorded in this region and the list keeps growing. 14 of the regions 20 endemics can be found here.
