What is Infertility

• Most people will have the strong desire to
  conceive a child at some point during their
  lifetime. Understanding what defines normal
  fertility is crucial to helping a person, or
  couple, know when it is time to seek help. Most
  couples (approximately 85) will achieve
  pregnancy within one year of trying, with the
  greatest likelihood of conception occurring
  during the earlier months. Only an additional 7
  of couples will conceive in the second year. As a
  result, infertility has come to be defined as the
  inability to conceive within 12 months. This
  diagnosis is therefore shared by 15 of couples
  attempting to conceive.

Causes in men

• Low sperm count The man ejaculates a low number
  of sperm. A sperm count of under 15 million is
  considered low. Around one third of couples have
  difficulty conceiving due to a low sperm count.
• Low sperm mobility (motility) The sperm cannot
  swim as well as they should to reach the egg.
• Abnormal sperm The sperm may have an unusual
  shape, making it harder to move and fertilize an
  egg.

Causes in women

• Premature ovarian failure The ovaries stop
  working before the age of 40 years.
• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) The ovaries
  function abnormally and ovulation may not occur.
• Hyperprolactinemia If prolactin levels are high,
  and the woman is not pregnant or breastfeeding,
  it may affect ovulation and fertility.
• Poor egg quality Eggs that are damaged or
  develop genetic abnormalities cannot sustain a
  pregnancy. The older a woman is, the higher the
  risk.
• Thyroid problems An overactive or underactive
  thyroid gland can lead to a hormonal imbalance.
• Chronic conditions These include AIDS or cancer.

Treatments

• In men, fertility is treated with
• Surgery, if the cause is a varicoele (widening of
  the veins in the scrotum) or a blockage in the
  vas deferens, tubes that carry sperm.
• Antibiotics to treat infections in the
  reproductive organs.
• Medications and counseling to treat problems with
  erections or ejaculation.
• Hormone treatments if the problem is a low or
  high level of certain hormones.

Treatments

• In women, infertility is treated with
• Fertility drugs and hormones to help the woman
  ovulate or restore levels of hormones
• Surgery to remove tissue that is blocking
  fertility (such as endometriosis) or to open
  blocked fallopian tubes
• IUI (intrauterine insemination) Sperm is
  collected and placed directly inside the women's
  uterus while they are ovulating.
• IVF (in vitro fertilization) The sperm and egg
  are collected and brought together in a lab. The
  fertilized egg grows for 3 to 5 days days. Then
  the embryo is placed in the woman's uterus.
• GIFT (gamete intrafallopian transfer)
  and ZIFT (zygote intrafallopian transfer) The
  sperm and egg are collected and quickly placed in
  a fallopian tube.
