Title: Teamwork

1
Teamwork
  • The Johari Window

2
The Johari Window
  • Joe Luft and Harry Ingham developed a model for
self awareness it shows two dimensions to
understanding ourselves and ultimately our team.

3
The Johari Window
  • Dimension one
  • Aspects of our behaviour and style that are known
or not known to us (self)
  • Dimension two
  • aspects of our behaviour and style known or not
known to those we have contact with (others)

4
The Johari Window
  • You know You
    dont know
  • They know
  • They dont
  • know

5
Public self or arena
  • Is the part of ourselves that everyone knows.
  • It includes such information as our name, job,
    and experience in an organisation

6
The Blind Area
  • Contains things about us that others can see but
    of which we are unaware.
  • For example
  • The way you ask questions you may believe they
stem from a desire to know something, but your
manner irritates others who feel they are being
    cross-examined

7
The Closed area
  • Contains things we know about ourselves but which
    others do not secret things.
  • Most of us have thoughts and feelings in our
closed area we choose not to reveal to others.
  • At times revealing this area to others can
    improve communications, trust teamwork

8
Unknown Area
  • The final area is the unknown area. This contains
information that is unknown to both ourselves and
    others.
  • This is the vast area of the unconscious

9
In Practice
  • Try to increase the size of your arena and shrink
    your blind side
  • self reflection
  • asking others for feedback
  • showing more of yourself
  • taking risks
  • be aware of the public aspects about yourself
such as facial expression and body language

Case study
  • Questions
  • Why do you think the team is ignoring Tims
    policy change?
  • If you were Tim how would you overcome the sense
of me verses them in your team?
  • What advice would you give to Tim when dealing
with an experienced staff member like Trish?
