What does aCalifornia Quail look like?
  • The California Quail is a bird.
  • They are 10-11 inches high with a black and white
    face.
  • They have a plump, short and black plume on top
    of their heads.
  • A funny thing about them is that their belly has
    a soccer ball like pattern.
  • The female looks like a bigger version of the
kid, while the male has no downy feathers and is
    a bit shorter.

  • The California Quail is omnivorous.
  • It eats not only seeds, grain and berries, but
    also insects, and small invertebrates.
  • If you were wondering, an invertebrate is a bug
    with no spine.
  • The California Quail seems to have a balanced
    diet.

Where does theCalifornia Quail live?
  • The California Quail lives in the valley and
    coastal regions of California.
  • It also lives in the southern regions of Oregon
    and western regions of Nevada.
  • It likes to live in a mixture of shrub and low
trees, and sometimes in open plains and gardens.
  • The California Quail lives near the trees, but
    not in them.

How does the California Quail escape from
predators?
  • Even though its reluctant to fly, it flies long
enough to get away from predators.
  • Sometimes it also just quickly runs away.
  • They dont go in to tall grass because they wont
    see their predators.
  • Sometimes the predator is us because we sometimes
    hunt them for food.

6
How dothe California Quails mate?
  • When looking for a mate, the males sometimes
    compete against each other.
  • The CA Quail will only have one mate for its
    lifetime.
  • The mating season is between May and July.
  • After the pair mate and find a nest, the female
    will lay 12-16 eggs.
  • After the chicks are hatched, both parents care
    for the chicks.
