Write down the vectors of your pathway.
Write down the vectors of some other pathways
from A to H. What do you notice?

Lesson Plan Learning Objective to understand
vector notation, to understand properties of
adding vectors Resources Voting cards, Copies of
slide 4 (possibly laminated so they can be
written on with white board pens). Slide 8 cut
up into cards. Starter Show slide 2. Ask for a
volunteer to come forward and give the vector
from, say, A to B. They write down their answer
for all to see. All of the class then decide
whether that person was right or wrong and uses
their voting cards to communicate this. Discuss
the volunteers answer. The volunteer then
chooses two points and the next volunteer comes
forward. This process continues until the teacher
is satisfied that everyone in the class is
confident about expressing vectors. Main Activity
1 Students are to work in triplets. One student
is the Quizmaster the other two students are
the Players. Give each triplet a set of slide
8 cards. The Quizmaster should have all the
vectors, the players have a set of pathway cards
each. The Quizmaster should shuffle their cards
and place them face down in front of them. The
Players leave their cards upturned in front of
them. The Quizmaster turns over their top card.
The Players have to find the matching pathway
card. The fastest Player wins that round. The
Quizmasters decision is final. It is their
responsibility to check the Players answers. Main
Activity 2 Show slides 3 then 4. Students write
down pathways from A to B and the associated
vectors (this may be done in pairs or
groups). Plenary Show slide 5. Check that
everyone has realised that their vectors add up
to . Show slide 6. Ask what the vectors
shown add up to (independent work).
