What is Turnitin?

• Turnitins plagiarism prevention system lets you
  quickly and effectively check all of your
  students work in a fraction of the time
  necessary to scan a few suspect papers using a
  search engine.
• Every paper submitted is returned in the form of
  a customized Originality Report. Results are
  based on exhaustive searches of billions of pages
  from both current and archived instances of the
  internet, millions of student papers previously
  submitted to Turnitin, and commercial databases
  of journal articles and periodicals.
• Turnitin is hosted entirely off-site and is 100
  browser-accessible.

Two Ways to Use Turnitin
By Students
Students can create their own accounts and join
the classes that are using the system. Turnitin
Assignments can be configured to allow multiple
submissions, allowing students to learn from
their Originality Reports.
By Faculty
Faculty can submit papers on behalf of students
or anonymously.

• We see Turnitin used primarily as a tool for
  students, to ultimately support their
  learning-about plagiarism, about honesty, about
  writing papers
• its availability alone is a deterrent
• is independent of our LMSs- can be integrated
