Title: ECE 191: Project 5 Ocean Bottom Attachments

1
ECE 191 Project 5Ocean Bottom Attachments
  • Sponsor Spawar
  • Mentor Tom Tucker
  • Members Steve Walsh, Robb Raffaelli, Ying Yu
    (Eric) Deng, Greg Kovell

2
Agenda
  • Met with mentor on Oct 13th
  • Budget
  • New research on current sensors
  • Design of comparator for output voltage sensor
  • Gantt Chart
  • Summary/Goals

3
Meeting with mentor
  • Focus on the sand/silt application
  • -- BYU group working on hard surface
    attachment
  • Create budget
  • Demo set up for Wed 10/22
  • One battery for unit
  • --use of voltage dividers
  • Save money by using existing prototype

4
Budget
  • Worst Case
  • Submersible pump Rule 12V, 2A, 500 GPH, 20
  • Salad bowls for spherical housing, 25
  • Batteries (dry cells), 25
  • 2 33 gallon trashcans, 40
  • 3 bags of playground sand, 5 each (50 lbs.
    each)
  • Diatomaceous earth (silt/sediment), 45 (50
    lbs.)
  • -- Looking into other sources of sediment
  • Current sensor (CUI Inc. model SCD), 14
  • Comparator
  • Best Case
  • Availability of the prototype eliminates all
costs other than the current sensor and other
    electrical components

5
New Research on Current Sensors
  • Open loop current sensors
  • -- preferred in battery powered applications
  • -- price advantages over closed loop
  • -- lower power consumption
  • Available current sensors
  • -- CDI Inc. model SCD
  • -- Open loop Hall Effect sensor
  • -- Small, power efficient
  • -- Overload shutdown

6
Design of Comparator
This is a basic example of a comparator that
may be useful. -- Threshold voltage can be set
after determining the approximate operating
output voltage of the pump After determining
circuit noise, a different circuit may be
utilized to minimize the noise -- The resistor
values will vary depending on the output voltage
from testing
7
Gantt Chart
8
Summary/Goals
  • Met with mentor 10/13
  • Meet with SIO rep 10/17
  • Submit budget to mentor
  • Finalize current sensor approach and order parts
  • Begin testing prototype
