UXO and Depleted Uranium Awareness for visitors
to the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge. Pick
up or remove UXO and/or DU and lose your
privileges forever. Dont pick up/step on, kick
or otherwise disturb man-made objects found on
the refuge, they could explode and kill you!
Report to the US Fish and Wildlife Service
(USFWS) office upon leaving the refuge all
unidentified man-made objects. [phone]
Before you enter the refuge, it will be your
responsibility to become familiar with the
authorized access areas. Know where you are at
all times. Do not cross restricted areas they
are there for a reason. Use common sense and
obey all posted speed limits. Take plenty of
water. Dont reach where you cant see and where
snakes and spiders might be. As this is a
wildlife refuge, be mindful of the existing
habitats and leave the areas in the same shape as
you found them.

UNEXPLODED ORDNANCE (UXO) Ordnance that has been
fired or placed but did not detonate as expected.
Ordnance may still be active and
unstable. DEPLETED URANIUM (DU) Depleted Uranium
is a dense, slightly radioactive heavy metal used
by the US and other forces as munitions, armor,
and other applications. HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED
WITH DU Like lead and other heavy metals, taking
large amount of uranium into the body could
affect your health. The primary organ affected
is the kidney. ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN If you find a
penetrator outside of a restricted area, notify
the USFWS office upon your departure.
