WEEK 11
  • GENESIS
  • FLOOD

5
Foundational Scriptures
Genesis 11 in the beginning God created the
heaven and the earth John 11 in the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God
6
Romans 118-25 NO EXCUSE!
For since the creation of the world God's
invisible qualitieshis eternal power and divine
naturehave been clearly seen, being understood
from what has been made, so that men are without
excuse...
7
UNIFORMITARIANISM
  • The theory that all geologic phenomena may be
explained as the result of existing forces having
operated uniformly from the origin of the earth
    to the present time.

8
GENESIS FLOOD
  • The Genesis Flood radically altered history.
  • The Genesis Flood was violent, covered the entire
Earth, and largely formed the geologic column

9
PERSPECTIVES
  • Which perspective, uniformity or the Genesis
Flood gives a more accurate depiction of what we
    see today?

10
PERSPECTIVES
  • To understand (measure) biological and geological
    phenomena correctly, your perspective is
    IMPORTANT!

Gods Warning to Noah
  • And behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters
upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is
the breath of life, from under heaven and every
thing that is in the earth shall die.
  • Genesis 617

Biblical Account of the Flood
  • The fountains of the deep broke open (711)
  • And the rain was upon the earth 40 days and 40
    nights (7-12)
  • The waters prevailed and increased greatly (718)
  • The waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth
    (719)
  • The waters lifted the Ark (450 feet long)
  • The waters covered the mountains by 15 cubits
    (720)

15
Biblical Account of the Flood
  • All flesh died that moved upon the earth (721)
  • All in whose nostrils was the breath of life died
    (722)
  • Only Noah and his family survived.
  • The waters prevailed upon the earth 150 days
    (724)
  • The flood lasted 1 year and 11 days (711, 814)
  • And the waters receded from off the earth
    continually (83)
  • 5 months after the start of the flood, the Ark
came to a rest upon Ararat (84)

Natural Disaster Comparison
  • Tsunami, Katrina, and Mt. St. Helens in
comparison to Genesis Flood is like comparing a
grain of sand to an entire beach
  • The Flood occurred about 1,600 years after
    creation
  • Population at time of Flood over 1-billion

22
Understanding Genesis Flood
  • God knows the heart of Man
  • I am the Gate

23
The Heart of Man
24
The Gate
  • JOHN 10 1"I tell you the truth, the man who does
not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs
in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.
2The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd
of his sheep. 3The watchman opens the gate for
him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls
his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When
he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead
of them, and his sheep follow him because they
know his voice. 5But they will never follow a
stranger in fact, they will run away from him
because they do not recognize a stranger's
voice." 6Jesus used this figure of speech, but
they did not understand what he was telling them.
  • 7Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the
truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who ever
came before me were thieves and robbers, but the
sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate
whoever enters through me will be saved.a He
will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy I
have come that they may have life, and have it to
    the full.
  • 11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd
lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired
hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So
when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the
sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the
flock and scatters it. 13The man runs away
because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for
    the sheep.
  • 14"I am the good shepherd I know my sheep and
my sheep know me 15just as the Father knows me
and I know the Fatherand I lay down my life for
the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of
this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too
will listen to my voice, and there shall be one
flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father
loves me is that I lay down my lifeonly to take
it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay
it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay
it down and authority to take it up again. This
command I received from my Father."

25
Gods Heart
  • Lot Example
  • Only Noah heard Gods voice and responded.
  • Water Baptism

26
Physical Evidences for Genesis Flood
  • Earths geologic features require a catastrophic
    explanation
  • Large coal, oil, ore deposits are not forming
    today

27
Physical Evidences for Genesis Flood
  • Igneous Rock like granite are formed by
    catastrophic event - VOLCANOES!
  • Sedimentary Rock like sandstone are formed by
    catastrophic event EXTREME WATER PRESSURE!
  • St. Peter Sandstone covers U.S!
  • Like limestone are formed by catastrophic event -

28
Physical Evidences for Genesis Flood
  • Q What would one expect to find with a worldwide
flood that killed and buried everything?
  • A One would expect to find billions of dead
things buried in sedimentary rock layers laid
down by water all over the world.  Does anything
like this exist?  Of courseit is called the
    fossil record

29
Physical Evidences for Genesis Flood
  • Great fossil beds exist requiring rapid burial at
    massive scale
  • Mountains made of ocean-bottom rocks, ocean
fossils on continent interior mountains, fossils
of warm habitat plants/animals near the poles

Geologic Column
Steven Austin (Ph.D. Geology), Ten
Misconceptions about the Geologic Column, Impact
137, Nov. 1984.
  • The notion that the earths crust has an onion
skin structure with successive layers containing
all strata systems distributed on a global scale
is not according to the facts.
  • Data from continents and ocean basins show that
the ten systems are poorly represented on a
    global scale

Continued
32
GEOLOGIC COLUMN
  • Approximately 77 of the earths surface area on
land and under the sea is missing seven or more
    (70) of the strata systems.

33
GEOLOGIC COLUMN
  • 94 of the earths surface has three or more
    systems missing beneath
  • 99.6 has at least one missing.
  • Only a few locations on earth (about 0.4 of its
area) have been described with the succession of
    the ten systems beneath.
  • The entire geologic column, exists only in the
    diagrams drawn by geologists.

34
Non-Geological Flood Evidences
  • Origin of civilization is near ark landing
    (based on archeology)
  • Written history appears 5-6,000 years ago
  • Pottery, agriculture, domestication, metallurgy,
    cities date lt11,000 years ago

35
Other Flood Evidences
  • Tree ring studies of oldest living trees
(Bristlecone pines) date to 5,000 years ago
  • Population statistics suggest a thousands of
years (vs. a million) population build up
  • Radiocarbon dating age distribution analysis
shows large spike of death about 5,000 years ago

36
Social Evidence
37
Flood Controversy
  • Local Flood Theories are advocated by
    Evolutionists
  • Local Flood is totally inconsistent with the Bible

38
Local Flood?
  • Why would Noah have to build an Ark?
  • He could have walked to the other side of the
mountains and escaped. God could have simply
warned Noah to flee, as He did for Lot in Sodom

39
Local Flood?
  • Why was the Ark big enough to hold all the
different kinds of land vertebrate animals in the
    world?
  • If only Mesopotamian animals were aboard, or only
domestic animals, the Ark could have been much
    smaller.

40
Local Flood?
  • Why did God send the animals to the Ark to escape
    death?
  • There would have been other animals to reproduce
those kinds even if they had all died in the
local area. Or He could have sent them to a
    non-flooded region.

41
Local Flood?
  • Why would birds have been sent on board?
  • Birds could simply have winged across to a nearby
    mountain range!

42
Local Flood?
  • It makes Jesus a fool..
  • Jesus believed that the Flood killed everyone not
    on the Ark (Matt. 243739)

43
Conclusion
  1. The Genesis Flood is a viable event from which to
look at biological and geological phenomena.
  2. More Importantly, Do you hear Gods Voice calling
    you?
