Many characters are similar. Many are different.
Some characters are similar and different. Caddie
from Caddie Woodlawn and Jane from Baby Island,
both written by Carol Ryrie Brink, are just that.
The two girls compare and contrast in many
ways. One similarity that Caddie and Jane have
is that they are both brave. Caddie is brave
because she makes friends with the chief Indian.
Everyone in Caddies story is very afraid of the
Indians. Caddie is not afraid she goes right up
and says hello. She greets them very cheerfully.
Jane is brave because she is not afraid to go
into a strange jungle to hunt for food. Jane
eagerly volunteers to leave the tent to go into
the jungle to hunt for food. Jane comes skipping
out of the jungle with bananas, not the least bit
frightened. Another similarity that the two girls
have is that they are both very good caregivers.
Caddie takes care of Hetty. Hetty feels left out
because no one plays with her. Caddie realizes
this and starts to let Hetty play with her. Jane
helps the babies that she is stranded with. Jane
searches for food in the jungle, milk in the
lifeboat, and she washes the babies. If Jane did
not do these things, the babies would probably
not live. The third thing that Caddie and Jane
have in common is that they both go on a journey.
Caddies journey is within herself. The journey
is a journey from a wild girl to a civilized
young lady. Caddie runs through the woods in the
beginning of the story, but by the end she is
doing needlework. Janes journey is a literal
journey. She travels from the U.S. to Baby
Island. From Baby Island, Jane travels to
Australia. Caddie and Jane have many
similarities. The two girls also have many
differences. One difference is in the way the
girls change. Caddie goes through a drastic
change, while only readers with excellent insight
will be able to notice Janes change. Since Carol
Ryrie Brink wrote both books, there is still a
change in both characters. Caddie changes from a
tomboy to a girl. Jane goes from being uncaring
to a more concerned person. In Caddie Woodlawn,
Carol Ryrie Brink goes as far as to get her
character whipped so that Caddie changes. That
triggers a noticeable change. In Baby Island,
Carol Ryrie Brink gives Jane a tiny springboard
to change. Jane must learn how to survive and
help others survive. Another difference that is
brought to the readers attention is the fact
that Caddie has easy access to food whereas Jane
must find and capture her food. Caddie lives in a
house where her mother cooks her food. Being on
an island, Jane must find bananas, catch fish,
and go claming for her food. Jane doesnt have
the cooking utensils that Caddie does though.
Jane must cook over an open fire, if she can
light one. The last difference is the amount of
parental influence on the two girls. Caddie has
two parents to talk to when she wants to and they
talk to her. Jane doesnt have any parents on the
island, and at her house she only has her father.
Caddie seems happier than Jane and Jane is always
homesick for her father. Readers will find many
other ways to compare and contrast Caddie and
Jane. Carol Ryrie Brink did a wonderful job
creating these two characters.

Characters from different books can be similar
and different. Characters from The Sign of the
Beaver and characters from The Witch of Blackbird
Pond both written by Elizabeth George Speare are
books with characters that are similar and
different. Matt and Kit are examples of these
characters. Kit and Matt are similar when they
are brave. For example, when Matt was brave, he
was trying to save the Indian dog. When Kit was
brave she was trying to help Hannah Tupper. They
also both taught someone to read and write. Matt
taught Attean and Kit taught Prudence. Another
reason that they are similar is that they are
both new to the area. Kit just moved to
Wethersfield, Connecticut and Matt just moved
somewhere in the woods where nobody lived. They
also both made new friends. Matt was friends
with Attean and Kit made friends with Nat, John,
Mercy, Hannah, Prudence, Judith, and
William. Kit is different to Matt by being rich.
She has many dresses. Kit is also from
Barbados. Matt is not. She is also a great
swimmer. She went overboard on the Dolphin to
save a girls doll. Matt is different to Kit by
surviving in the woods all alone. He was very
lonely. He was friends with an Indian, Attean.
He was different to Kits friends. Matt also has
parents. Kit has no parents. Her parents died,
and then she lived with her grandfather, now he
died and now Kit lives with her Aunt, her Uncle,
and her two cousins. Characters are different
and similar from other books.

Between two books characters are the same and
different in many way. This is true for Matt in
The Sign of the Beaver and Kit in The Witch of
Black Bird Pond by Elizabeth George Spear. Matt
and Kit have alt in common and a lot
different. Matt and Kit are common in lots of
ways. Matt and Kit are both new in a place.
Matts new in the forest and kits new in
Wethersfield. Also, they both make a friend. Matt
made great friends with Attean Kit and Nat were
amazing friends too. Finally Matt and kit ended
up saving a different friend. Matt saved Atteans
dog. Kit saved Hannah. Thats how there the
same. Matt and Kit are different in many ways
to. First matt is sort of a chicken and kit is
really brave. Also matt is in the wild wail Kit
is on a farm. Kits dad is dead and Matts father
is still around. Thats how they are the same and
different. With that you can see that characters
have similarities and deferents.
