FATHER KNOWS BEST
  • CASE STUDY OF ELI
  • ELIS WICKED SONS 212-36
  • Hophni Phine - stealing from God 212-17
  • 12 Elis sons were scoundrels they had no regard
    for the Lord.
  • 17 This sin of the young men was very great in
the Lords sight, for they were treating the
    Lords offering with contempt. (NIV)

15
ELIS WICKED SONS 212-36
  • Elis sons stealing from God 212-17
  • Samuel serving God 218-21
  • Eli sinning against God 222-25
  • 22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about
everything his sons were doing to all Israel and
how they slept with the women who served at the
entrance to the tent of meeting.
  • 23 So he said to them . . .

16
ELIS TWO QUESTIONS
  • 23 Why do you do such things?
  • 25 If one person sins against another, God may
mediate for the offender but if anyone sins
against the Lord, who will intercede for them?
  • His sons, however, did not listen to their
    fathers rebuke . . .

17
ELIS WICKED SONS 212-36
  • Elis sons stealing from God 212-17
  • Samuel serving God 218-21
  • Eli sinning against God 222-25
  • Samuel growing in God 226
  • Eli corrected by God 227-36

18
GODS TWO QUESTIONS
  • 29 Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering
that I prescribed for my dwelling?
  • Why do you honor your sons more than me by
fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every
offering made by my people Israel?

19
WHAT WERE THE SINS OF ELI?
  • TOO LITTLE TOO LATE
  • 1 Samuel 230
  • Now the Lord declares Those who honor me I will
honor, but those who despise me will be
    disdained.
  • 1 Samuel 313
  • For I told him Eli that I would judge his
family forever because of the sin he knew about
his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to
    restrain them.

20
BIBLICAL METANARRATIVE

21
1 Samuel 31, 10
  • 3 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under
Eli. In those days of Elis leadership the word
of the Lord was rare there were not many
    visions.
  • 10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at
the other times, Samuel! Samuel! Then Samuel
said, Speak, for your servant is listening.

22
1 Samuel 319-41
  • 19 The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he
let none of Samuels words fall to the ground.
20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba
recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet
of the Lord. 21 The Lord continued to appear at
Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel
    through his word.
  • 4 And Samuels word came to all Israel.

23
ENCOUNTERS OF A FAMILY KIND
  • 1 2 Samuel
  • Family Leadership National Leadership
  • Eli sons 1 Samuel 212-36
  • Samuel sons 1 Samuel 81-5
  • Saul sons 1 Samuel 2030-34
  • David sons 1 Kings 15-6
  • A leaders capacity to lead his family reflected
his capability to lead the nation of God.

24
New Testament IMPLICATIONS
  • Public Private Leadership
  • 5th commandment (Ex. 2012)
  • Pauls guidance (Eph. 61-4)
  • Overseers (1 Tim. 34-5,12,15)Politics the
    Family

25
1 Timothy 34-5, 12
  • 4 He an overseer must manage his own family
well and see that his children obey him, and he
must do so in a manner worthy of full respect.
5 If anyone does not know how to manage his own
family, how can he take care of Gods church?
  • 12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must
manage his children and his household well. (NIV)

26
1 Timothy 315
  • If I am delayed, you will know how people ought
to conduct themselves in Gods household, which
is the church of the living God, the pillar and
    foundation of the truth.

27
ENCOUNTERS OF A FAMILY KIND
  • EARLY CHURCH
  • Family Leadership Church Leadership
  • An overseers capacity to lead his family
household reflected his capability to lead the
    household of God.

28
IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
  • WEAK FATHER WEAK LEADER
  • WEAK LEADER WEAK CHURCH
  • STRONG FATHER STRONG LEADER
  • STRONG LEADER STRONG CHURCH

29
  • The analysis of the father-son relationships and
leadership in the Book of Samuel could also be
applied to the paternal relationship between
    missionary and national church leadership
development. In effect the pioneer missionaries
in any given people group or new area of
service/ministry are "fathers" to their "sons" in
ministry, and the principles identified apply.
