information from any other computer (and
sometimes talk directly to users at other
computers). from http//searchwindevelopment.tec

County Public Schools as well as all schools
throughout the state of Tennessee. The filtering
software prohibits access to Internet sites based
on known inappropriate content or determined to

    or downloading music/video
  • Evaluation of web pages for content, validity and
authenticity not all information is valid or
    appropriate
  • Emphasis and/or awareness of cyberbullies

How do we teachInternet Safety?
  • We need to guide our students to make good
choices in their Internet travels. Guide students
to the many sites that Knox County has as
    subscriptions.
  • Just as we teach children to be safe in the halls
of our schools, crossing the street or driving a
car, we must teach them to use the Internet
    safely.
  • It should be taught as an integrated whole not a
    one time training lesson.
  • We should utilize the teachable moment whenever
a topic can illustrate a component of Internet
    safety.

Teachers and Parents
What can teachers and parents do to promote
Internet Safety?
  • Need to know the signs of cyberbullying and what
to do if one of their students is harrassed.
  • Need to remind students over and over that people
online are not always who they claim to be, and
    Internet information is not always
    accurate/appropriate.
  • Must teach students what types of personal
information they are never to share on the
    Internet without parent approval name,
address, phone number, email address, school
    they attend

Cyberbullying is the use of e-mail, instant
messaging, chat rooms, pagers, cell phones, or
other forms of information technology to
deliberately harass, threaten, or intimidate
someone.

Teachers and Parents
What can teachers and parents do to promote
Internet Safety?
  • Need to emphasize that exchanging information
with others online can be dangerous.
  • Need to talk to students about the policies on
    exchanging/downloading files.
  • Need to know e-mail dangers and offer information
to kids on how to recognize problem signs.
  • Need to point out that online journals/blogs
should not reveal too much information predators
can use the information to get around
    restrictions.
  • Need to check age-appropriate levels of sites
    that kids visit especially social
    networking.

Create Safety Rules for Kids
What can teachers and parents do to promote
Internet Safety?
  • Students need to hear the safety rules often.
  • Internet safety rules should be posted near all
    computers.
  • Teachers and parents should review rules
    frequently.
  • Students should know consequences of disobeying
    the rules.
  • Students need to know what steps to take when
    accidently accessing inappropriate sites.
  • Teachers and parents must be consistent in
    enforcing rules and the policies.
