NAS Backup Gotchas
  • Still need off-site
  • May not be able to go back to various points in
time (2 weeks ago, 3 months ago, 1 year ago)

6
NTBackup 2003 Server
  • Included with OS
  • Volume Shadow Copy enabled
  • Capable of backing up most open files without
    additional cost
  • Handles managed / unmanaged media
  • Requires scripting for running as a scheduled
    service

7
SP_HFWBackup
  • If you add a halFILE database you must add a new
step to the backup job for it to be included in
    the flat file backup.
  • Files typically in \halfile\database\backup

8
What to backup?
  • All SQL Database files with SP_HFWBackup
  • All image files typically \halfile\baskets\ and
    locations in Configure Drives
  • \halFILE Program directory
  • IIS Configuration and e.halFILE web-site

9
Disaster Recovery Planning
  • Figure out how long you can afford in terms of
    down-time
  • Document a plan for recovering an entire server
to its current state that fits into your
    down-time vs. cost analysis
  • Other than backup what else do you need? (cds
for OS, Crystal, halFILE, backup, etc.)
  • Test your plan
