• The Eritrean-Ethiopian War lasted for 30 years
  (1961-1991)
• Mengitsu Mariam was a high ranked officer which
  lead the Mengitsu government into a more
  militaristic state.
• Mengitsu government killed thousands of people in
  attempt of genocide
• The Oromos were taken over by the Derg and Amharas

• We think that the war is related to the story
  because Mawis family needed to come to America
  due to the affects this war had on them.

• Mawi felt bullied in school because of where he
  came from and because of how he was different
  from other students.

• Mawi came from a refugee camp with little to no
  finances to bring to America, so he was below the
  poverty line growing up.
