What are fiber optics?
  • Fiber optics (n.) The science or technology of
    light transmission through very fine, flexible
    glass or plastic fibers
  • Fiber optics (n.) A bundle of optical fibers.

Uses
  • Fiber optics can be used for presentation of
    light, as in fiber optic lamps.
  • Fiber optics also transmit data faster than
    copper wire because light travels faster than
    radio waves.
  • Fiber optics can be used to transmit computer and
    telephone information.

Internal Reflection
  • If the angle of incidence is great enough, the
    light is bent so much that it is reflected
    rather than transmitted through the new medium.
    This is called total internal reflection.

Total internal reflection, cont.
  • By a continuous series of total internal
    reflections, laser light can be transported
    through and optic fiber. A tiny laser at the end
    of a fiber can shine light through a fiber,
    around a spool, and all the way to the end of the
    fiber.

How fiber optics are used
  • Before data is sent, it is translated to binary
    form (if necessary).
  • A laser or diode then flashes those 1s and 0s
    into a glass fiber. If the light is on, that's a
    1. If it's off, that's a 0.
  • The light bounces through the glass fiber until
    it is received by another fiber optic modem.
  • The fiber optic method works basically the same
    way as regular copper modems, but instead of
    electrical pulses, it uses pulses of light.

  • Fiber optics can be used to transmit data in
    telephone, internet, live broadcasts, and is 20x
    faster than copper wire because it uses light
    instead of electrical pulses.
