And I saw in the right hand of Him that sat on
the throne a book written within and on the
backside, sealed with seven seals.
40
The Lamb of God by Hubert and Jan van Eyck
41
Johns Third Vision
Sealed book concerns the redemption of men.
During the Old Testament times, property or
persons could be alienated by reason of severe
debt owed to another. The record of the debt was
kept in a duplicate format, one sealed the other
open to witnesses.
42
Johns Third Vision
The debt could be redeemed either by the original
owner or his heirs (Leviticus 2535 - 55
Jeremiah 325 - 12). These debts and their
redemption required investigation to determine to
whom the debt was owed and who was eligible to
pay the redemption price (see also the story of
Ruth). The sealed books had to be opened by one
who was worthy.
