Arachnid Project
  • 12 spider species
  • Each label must have common name
  • 2 must have proper scientific name
  • All must have place where it was found and the
name of the person who found it.
  • Presentation counts

5
Leaf Project
  • 18 leaf species
  • 1 2 leaves per page so that you have a book
  • All leaves must be identified by the plant they
came from using both the common name and the
    scientific name.
  • All leaves must be identified with the place the
leaf was found and the person who found it.
  • Use a leaf press to flatten and dry leaves (5-7)
    days

Leaf Press
  • 1) Select a flat area on the floor, desk, or
tabletop in a room with good air circulation.
  • 2) Place wax paper or foil on the surface you
choose. This is for protection of both the leaves
    and the surface.
  • 3) Prepare necessary sheets of unfolded newspaper
adequate for the number of leaves you have
collected. You want several paper thicknesses per
    layer between each pressing.
  • 4) Place the fresh leaf specimen(s) to be pressed
on the first sheet layers. Be careful not to let
leaves overlap or wrinkle by overcrowding. Then
simply use additional layers of paper between
    more pressings.
  • 5) Cover the top and final layer of newspaper
with stiff cardboard or plywood, which has been
cut to the same size as the paper.
  • 6) Place sufficient weight (books, bricks, etc.)
on top of the plywood/cardboard to press leaves
flat and hold them in position.

Arthropods that are not Insects
  • Centipedes and Millipedes
  • Crustaceans (lobsters, crabs, shrimp,)
  • Arachnids (spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks)

12
How many are there?
  • 290,000 species of beetles
  • 103,000 species of ants, bees and wasps
  • 112,000 moths and butterflies
  • 164,000 other insects (flys etc.)

13
If you calculated the weight of all the insects
in the world..
  • It would be more than all other animals combined.

14
Monarch Butterflies
  • Gather in Mexico as many as 4 million per acre.

15
The Honey Bee Waggle Dance
  • When food is within 5075 meters of the hive, the
scouts dance the "round dance" on the surface of
the comb (left). But when the food is farther
than 75 meters from the hive, the scouts dance
    the "waggle dance" (right).
  • The waggle dance has two components
  • a straight run the direction of which conveys
information about the direction of the food
  • the speed at which the dance is repeated which
indicates how far away the food is.

16
  • Butterfly and moth wings are covered with many
    individually colored scales (actually broad
hairs) that make up the pattern designs and
    coloration characteristics for each species.
