Title: What happened to Einsteins Daughter

1
What happened to Einsteins Daughter?
2
Albert Mileva Meet
  • Albert Einstein and Mileva Maric met at the
Federal Polytechnical School in Oct. 1896 in
    Zurich.

3
Mileva
  • Mileva was three years older than Einstein. It
is believed she also inherited a displaced hip,
making one hip shorter than the other.

4
School
  • They become more involved, and both fail their
finals in 1900, but somehow Einstein got his
diploma but no job. She is studying to retake
them, while Einstein looks for a job.

5
The Beginning
  • In May 1901 Mileva agrees to meet Einstein at
Lake Como (in Italy) for a three or four day
weekend. Following this trip, Mileva finds out
she is pregnant. She proceeds to fail her exams
    for a second time.

6
  • Mileva heads home to be with her family. Einstein
finally got a job with the patent office in 1902.

7
January 1902
  • Lieserl was born in Novi Sad
  • It is believed the birth was difficult. Einstein
wrote, Poor dear sweetheart, you must suffer
enormously if you cannot even write to me
    yourself.

8
  • He goes on to add, Is she healthy, and does she
already cry properly? What kind of little eyes
does she have? Whom of the two of us does she
    resemble more?

9
1902 - 1903
  • Mileva travels back and forth between Switzerland
and her home to be with Einstein. During these
trips it is believed she left Lieserl with her
    parents.

10
January 6, 1903
  • Einstein and Mileva marry.

11
  • It seems there was never any attempt to bring
Lieserl to Switzerland with them. It is believed
that Einstein did not want to ruin his new
reputation by escorting her across the border.

12
Then where did she go?
  • No one knows for sure.
  • Mileva returns home in August and writes Einstein
that Lieserl was sick with scarlet fever. In a
1903 letter Einstein writes, I am very sorry
about what has happened to Lieserl. Scarlet fever
often leaves some lasting traces behind.

13
This is the last we know.
  • Einstein never saw his daughter.
  • No other mention of her occurs EVER.

14
Possible Theories
  • Most people believe she died from the scarlet
    fever.
  • Others believe she was put up for adoption.
  • Marija Dokmanovic from Mount Holyoke believes she
became an adult, but has not named her.

15
  • Michele Zackheim, author of Einsteins Daughter
The Search for Lieserl, spent five years crossing
several countries, only to find no records of
birth, death, adoption, or baptismal. (Perhaps
because of the wars in Serbia for so long.)

16
Did Einstein Raise his other Children?
  • Einstein and Mileva had two boys Hans Albert
born May 14, 1904 and Eduard born July 28, 1910.

17
NO
  • Einstein divorced Mileva in 1919 and married his
cousin. He sees the boys some, but not much.

18
Hans Albert Einstein
  • Became a professor of Hydraulic Engineering. Came
to the U.S. in 1938. Had three children 2 boys
    and an adopted daughter.
  • He did finally have a relationship with his
    father as an adult.
  • Died in 1973.

19
Eduard Einstein
  • Very smart.
  • Diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 20.
  • Was often hospitalized after 1932.

20
Eduard
  • Mileva wrote to Einstein in 1932 about Eduard.
You have a dear, seriously ill child. Often he
asks if his father will come..
  • Einstein NEVER visited him.
  • After his mothers death in 1948 he remained in
the psychiatric hospital until his death in 1965.

21
Another illegitimate daughter for Einstein??
  • It is also reported in several newspapers,
Einstein fathered another daughter, Evelyn, late
in life with a New York dancer.

22
And??
  • It is believed that Hans Albert adopted the baby
    never revealing the truth.
  • Hans Alberts daughter, Evelyn, was adopted in
1941 (which would make Einstein 62 years old).

23
What makes this interesting?
  • The existence of Lieserl was not known until 30
years after Einstein died when Albert
Einstein/Mileva Maric The Love Letters was
published in 1992. Thus, the world found out
    about Lieserl.

24
What makes this interesting?
  • NO ONE can find any paper trail of his daughter.
Were they lost in the destruction of the wars?
Or, did Einstein make sure they were destroyed?

25
What makes this interesting?
  • Did Einstein have any other children????
