Pune Industrial Statistics

No. of people working  in  IT and ITES
companies  at Pune Approx 2 lakh
8
Employment Statistics
  • Total direct employment by manufacturing
    industries in Pune Around 4,00,000
  • Indirect employment estimate (Labor not on the
rolls but which is on contract) Around 4,00,000
  • Thus, total employment created by manufacturing
sector in Pune Region is around 8,00,000

9
Power Prime hurdle for Industrial Development
  • Pune needs an immediate relief from this
shortfall. Hence increasing power supply capacity
in Maharashtra is of utmost importance
  • Group Captive power plants and islanding of Pune
    Region to be encouraged .
  • Since there is availability of Gas, it should be
utilized for setting up peaking power generation
plant in next 12-18 months to meet all our
    power requirements.

10
Power Supply and Demand Position
MSEDCL Power Supply and Demand Position
(CEA) Central Electricity Authority Peak demand
Peak demand for Pune circles is 890 (MW). The
quota of Pune from MSEDCL grid is 600- 650 MW.
Punes demand is increasing at 10 per
annum SourceMSEDCL data

Octroi Major Impediment
  • Amongst the major cities , Pune is the only one
    that has Octroi levy
  • Due to it procedural aspects- it gives rise to
    discretionary assessment , corruption, wastage
of time ,fuel , higher transaction cost of goods
and services, higher carbon releases in the air
    causing pollution etc.

12
Water Pollution
  • There are around 5525 industries with total
effluent generation of about 14500 MLD
  • 290 Units that discharge hazardous waste of about
600 M3 per day ,needs treatment.
  • Existing STP are using about 120 of their
    capacity
  • Hence raw sewage other than from industrial waste
    floods the rivers

13
Issues and Problems of Pune/ MIDC
  • Industries are already paying MIDC for fire
fighting services. Hence it is imperative to have
a proper infrastructure of fire stations.
  • Patrolling scheme, removal of encroachments in
MIDC areas are other areas that one needs to look
    at
  • Although Industrial License is not required when
Industries are located in the designated areas of
MIDC, members are asked to obtain and renew
    license from Corporations .

14
Public Transport
  • Efficient public transport either under ground or
    elevated tracks .
  • High Capacity Mass Transit Light Railway
( HCMTLR) projects are required to tackle
    increasing Traffic.

15
MAHARASHTRA MATHADI, HAMAL AND OTHER MANUAL
WORKERS (REGULATION OF EMPLOYMENT AND WELFARE)
ACT 1969
  • Current Issues
  • Irregular and unjustified demands of wage
    increase
  • Imposition of unsuitable (education, attitude,
    hygiene and habits) Mathadi workers
  • Extortion of money
  • Registration of those already doing the so called
    Mathadi work is not done
  • Stoppage of work
  • Low productivity, poor quality
  • No cognizance, corrective as well as preventive
action by Mathadi Board to deal with
    indiscipline

16
Roads Inadequate and Underdeveloped
  • Existing intra-city and inter-city roads need to
    be widened and bettered
  • Truck Parking on the outskirts prevent them from
    entering the premises
  • Expedition of coordinated signals
  • Expansion of synchronized signals that are camera
based for a smoother traffic flow

17
Government Policy
  • Early declaration and implementation of IT /
Animation Policies and other such policies.
  • Early implementation of various government
    projects.
  • Effective coordination between Government
    Departments and Agencies.
  • Simplification and rationalization of
    Infrastructure and regulatory policies.
  • Rationalization of statutory provisions and
    procedures.

18
International Airport for Western Maharashtra
Overdue since 10 years
  • Essential for Pune Region Growth
  • MIDC should acquire the land under its existing
act and hand it over to MADC for development
  • Put up the project for PPP
  • Pune is a perfect location since there is no
international air transport hub between Singapore
    and Dubai
  • An International Airport in this Region will
    Boost state Economy
  • Early and timely action required else risk of
losing the project to neighbouring states.

19
Futuristic Outlook
  • International Exhibition Centre
  • Upgrading the facilities at the existing Airport
  • Independent International Airport
  • Natural Gas supplies for transportation, power
    generation and industrial use
  • Mass Rapid Transportation System
  • Several Special Economic Zones under
    implementation/planned
  • Several Hotels coming up
  • Pune to be one of the few wi-fi cities of the
    world

19
20
  • Hence the city of Pune must deal urgently with
    its
  • Power
  • Water
  • Environment problems
  • Slum development
  • Roads, Traffic and transportation
  • Sewage and sanitation issues
  • To promote the city and make it into an
    international business attraction
