Today our presenter will be an Astronaut. She
has been with NASA for the last 10 years and has
made countless trips to the moon.
3
Welcome Mrs. Furman!
4
Will you give us some general information on the
moon?
Of course! The moon is the only natural
satellite earth has.
It is a pleasure to meet you. We have all been
looking forward to your visit.

6
The moon may appear to wobble. It has a slightly
noncircular orbit.
7
The moon rotates synchronously it is locked in
phase with its orbit so that the same side is
always facing towards the earth.
8
The moon is classified as a terrestrial planet.
This means it is composed primarily of rock and
metal. Terrestrial planets also have high
densities, slow rotations, solid surfaces, no
rings, and few satellites.
9
Evidence suggests there may be water in the form
of ice in deep craters near the moons South
Pole.
10
Most of the moons surface is covered with
regolith which is a powdery soil. A mixture of
fine dust and rocky debris produced by meteor
impacts.
11
There are two main types of terrain. The first
one is heavily cratered with very old
highlands. The second one is smooth Maria which
covers 16 of the moons surface.
12
Can you tell us what it is like traveling to the
moon?
O yes. This is my favorite topic. It takes
about 2.5 days to get to the moon.

I have a heavy space suite to wear while moon
walking. If a person were to remove any gear
while on the moon they would suffer severe frost
bite and other damages.
The clothing we wear in the space shuttle is very
similar to what is worn on earth. Except it is
made from fire redundant material.
My space suite weighs approximately 280 pounds.
However, it does not feel heavy on the moon. The
gravity is very different on the moon than on
earth.

What do you eat while in space?
Can you tell us about the first mission to the
moon?
That is a good question. I eat space food.
Bite-sized foods that are coated with an edible
gelatin to keep it from crumbling.
Some packages contain dry foods. To eat them,
you must inject water into a small opening,
squish the package around until the food inside
becomes a puree. Then you can squeeze the food
into you mouth.
17
Sure. The first space ship to land on the moons
surface was Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969. All of
the previous attempts to land on the moon failed
so this was a big event for space travel
history. There were two astronauts aboard this
space ship the famous Neil A. Armstrong,
Mission Commander, who spoke the first words as
he took his first step on the moon and Buzz
Aldrin, Col., USAF, Lunar Module Pilot.
Together, these two astronauts explored the
moons surface for 2.5 hours!
18
Thank you Mrs. Furman. The information you have
shared with us will be very helpful. We are
grateful you visited us.
19
It was nice to meet you. It is your generation
that holds the key to success for the United
States. We at NASA have high expectations of
you. I know you will meet them all. Thank you.
20
Now will be a great time to learn more about
Apollo 11. Imagine you are one of the crew
members on board Apollo 11. Write a journal/
diary entry about traveling to the moon. Some
things you may want to research might be what
astronauts eat in space, how they prepare or
train for moon travel, how they spend their day
in space, among other things.
21
When you are finished with your Journal entry you
are going to create a brochure.
22
It should be about traveling to the moon. You
should include the moons atmosphere, its
geological makeup, space travel costs and
preparations. Other ideas you may want to
include are how long it takes to get to the moon
and how the moon differs from earth. Work
together with your research group and do not
forget to add your journal entry and your
brochure to your presentation board.
