Leo Lesquereux

• On November 18, 1806, Leo Lesquereux was born in
  Fleurier, Switzerland.
• As a childhood, he love nature such as mountains,
  fields, and woods.
• At the age of seven, from the top of a mountain
  (Lesquereux Cliff), he fell and that caused him
  to become deaf.

• He started working for Louis Agassiz, collecting
  and classifying plants.
• In 1851, he was hired by H.D. Rogers to study
  coal plants in Pennsylvania.

Leo Lesquereux

• When he moved to America, in Boston, he was
  stopped by the police for smoking and fined him
  several dollars in 1848.
• He found a plant called Protophylum sternbergii
  in Sassafras Hollow. He named it after his
  friend, Sternberg. He was one of the great
  founders of fossil botany in North America.
