Title: Hello Third Graders

1
Hello Third Graders
  • Lets Start Learning!!

2
Thermometers
  • Do you know what a thermometer is?
  • It looks like a glass stick that has measurements
written on it to tell you how hot or cold
something is, which is called Celsius.
  • We use thermometers in everything from medicine
    to cooking.
  • Thermometers can sit outside and tell you how hot
or cold the temperature is each day.

3
  • Thermometers in the kitchen measure food
    temperatures
  • A thermometer in the furnace tells it when to
    turn on and off
  • When they are in the refrigerator and stove, it
keeps them at a set temperature
  • The fever thermometer in the medicine cabinet
measures your temperature when you are sick.

4
How to read a Thermometer
  • Reading the temperature on a thermometer is like
    reading a graph.
  • The numbers on the side of the thermometer go
from lowest to highest degrees, which start from
    bottom to top.
  • The thermometer fills up, which is a different
color so you can see it, to a certain point and
stops at what degree/Celsius the water or weather
    is.

5
Lets Experiment!!
  • First you will need to grab (from Ms. Spanninger)
a thermometer. You only need one per group. Also,
grab a handout that will give you further
    instructions.
  • Then you will use the thermometers to find the
temperature of ice water, tap water, water
sitting in the room, and if you have time
measure the temperature outside by holding the
    thermometer in your hands.

6
Something you need to know..
  • Ice is always 0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees
    Farenheit.
  • C is the symbol for Celsius and F is the symbol
    for Farenheit.
  • Boiling water is always 100 degrees Celsius or
    212 degrees Farenheit.

7
Next..
  • To show that you have learned to measure
temperatures with a thermometer, you will do a
worksheet that your teacher will give each of
    you.
  • You may work together with your group if you have
    trouble reading a thermometer.

8
Now, Lets Go Experiment
  • If you have any questions, you have your partner
    or your teachers to ask.
  • When you are finished with your worksheet, do the
    Word Find.
  • Have Fun!!!!

9
My Reflection On This Lesson
  • This lesson seemed to go better than the
previous, direct teaching lesson. The students
seemed to learn from the experiment and worked
    well with their assigned partners.

10
Mrs. Adcocks Reflection
  • Mrs. Adcock videotaped this lesson for me and
helped me set up as well. She is my mentor and
seemed to like this lesson better than the other,
    direct teaching lesson as well.

11
The Objective
  • The students will be able to understand how to
read Celsius and Fahrenheit on a thermometer.
  • They will be able to understand how a lower
degrees means it is colder than a degree that is
    higher in temperature.

12
Illinois Standard
  • IL-13.B.1a
  • Explain the uses of common scientific
    instruments (e.g., ruler, thermometer, balance,
    probe, computer)

13
Resources
  • Illinois Standards
  • www.puzzlemaker.com
  • Classroom Science lesson plan book
