Human responsibility
for Environmental conservation
By 6B (10) Lan Tin Yan 6B (12) Leung Yuen

2
Introduction
  • ? Human activities alter the natural environment.
  • ? Human activities rapid growth in human
    population, rapid industrial and urban
    development, etc.
  • What should we do to stop the development of
    undesirable changes?

This diagram shows more and more solid wastes are
collected by recycling bins.

What is conservation and sustainable development?
6
Environmental conservation - wise management of
our environment
7
  • Sustainable development
  • - meets the present needs without compromising
the needs for a good quality of life in our
    future generations

waste recovered in
2000
9
Hong Kongese lack the sense of waste reduction
and do not use the recycling bins wisely.
10
What does recycle mean? ? Changing used
materials to usable goods. ? A way of
conservation.
11
The importance of waste recycling ? Reducing the
rate of consumption of natural resources. ?
Reducing air pollution caused by human activities
? Reducing the pressure of landfill
sites. ?Teaching people the effective way of
waste disposal and environmental protection.
12
The waste recycling industry
in Hong Kong
13
Hong Kong has a substantial waste recovery
industry. The waste materials recovered are
mainly for export. There are about 300 active
waste collectors and 50 waste recyclers in Hong
Kong.
14
Recycling of paper ? Several of the waste paper
generated in Hong Kong was recovered. ? The
recovered waste paper was either recycled or
re-processed in Hong Kong, Mainland China and
other countries. ? About 120 private waste paper
collectors and 2 paper recyclers in Hong
Kong. ? The recycled paper were used for
packaging. Examples of paper recyclers in Hong
Kong Lau Choi Kee Paper Co. Ltd. A Division of
Greengrowth Co. Ltd

Lau Choi Kee Paper Co. Ltd.
About the wasted paper ? Recycle one tonne of
paper can save 17 lives of tree. 6953 gallon
of water, 463 gallon of oil, 4066 thousands
watts of energy. ? In order to protect our
natural resources, we should recycle the
wasted paper.
16
A Division of Greengrowth Co. Ltd ? Using
Skylight Recycle System (SRS). - collecting
the papers of document of companies and recycle
them. ? Have experience for many years. ?
Promise that the confidential document would not
be disclosed.
17
Recycling of metal ? Carried out in Hong Kong for
several decades. ? The industry has been
developed from individual waste collectors to
large scale collection and recycling industry. ?
Metal wastes are broadly classified into
-ferrous metals (e .g cast iron and alloy steel
scrap) -non- ferrous metals (e .g copper,
aluminium ). Examples of aluminium recycler in
Hong Kong Hop Lee Lung Metals Waste Paper Wing
Shing Metal Powerful Union Industrial Co. Hong
Luen Metal Trading Company

18
Hong Luen Metal Trading Company
? First established in 1986. ? Major business
are hardware trading, scrap metals collection,
recycling of scrap wire and cable. ? Has two
factories in China. ? Have a collection
warehouse that used as a transit station in
Tin Shui Wai.
19
Powerful Union Industrial Co. ? Specialize in
high value purchase of factory stocks, electronic
parts, machines, computer accessories ?
Recycle electronic wastes from different
countries (e .g U.S., Korea Japan.)?
Provide treatment for returned electronic wastes
from factories in Mainland China. ? Provide
electronic waste recycling service
20
Recycling of plastics ? Confined mainly to clean
and homogeneous scraps such as plastic
bottles and plastic bags due to the complicated
processing procedures. ? Only a small
proportion of the plastic wastes was
recovered. Examples of plastics recycler in
Hong Kong Hoi Kee Plastic Material Company
Limited Professional Recycle Service Ltd.
21
Super 4R
22
4R includes REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE and
REPLACE. Lets act 4R to help protecting our
environment!
23
  • REDUCE
  • buy and use less unnecessary items
  • ? Reduce the use of motor vehicles.
  • ? Write on both sides of paper.
  • ? Reduce the use of wooden stuffs.
  • ? Reduce the use plastic bags, bring your own
    bag.
  • ? Reduce the use of non-biodegradable stuffs.

24
  • RECYCLE
  • change used materials to usable goods
  • ? Collecting the old newspaper and magazines and
    sending them
  • to the factory for paper recycling.
  • ? The used aluminium cans and discarded cars or
    ships can be
  • processed to obtain metal for re-use.
  • ? The properly treated pig and poultry manures
    can be used as
  • fertilizers.
  • ? Place the used plastic bottles, aluminium cans
    and waster paper
  • into the recycling bin separately.

25
REUSE -use the things in different ways
repeatedly until it cannot be used anymore ?
Choose the reusable tableware, cups and
plates. ? Reuse the plastic bags that you get
from shops. ? Donate old computers to
charities. ? Reuse old envelopes. ? Reuse
files.
26
REPLACE -use the materials that cause less harm
to our environment ? Use handkerchief instead of
tissue paper. ? Use durable equipment instead of
disposable one. (e. g Use stainless steel
instead of disposable plastic fork.
Use durable plastic plate instead of paper
plate.) ? Use rechargeable battery instead of
non-rechargeable one. ? Use egg shell to
replace chemical fertilizer.
27
Think of them as your assignment
  • In order to protect our environment, so
  • 1.What can you help?
  • 2. What can the government help?
  • 3. What can the industrialist help?
