The National Society
  • Founded 1811
  • To found a Church school in every parish in
    England
  • Established a national system of education
  • Supplemented by the State from 1870 onwards.

    schooling each day for children
  • 1870 Elementary Provided education on an
    unprecedented scale
  • Education Act
  • 1880 Education Act School attendance compulsory
    for all children up to the age of ten.
  • 1902 Education Act Local Educational Authorities
    (LEAs) were created to organise funding,
    employ teachers and allocate school places.
  • 1918 Education Act Compulsory for all children up
    to the age of 14.
  • 1944 Education Act Secondary education now became
    free for all. School-leaving age rose to 15.
  • 1973 Education Act The school leaving age was
    raised to 16.
