Pathways Statewide Curriculum
  • Several senior institutions will participate in
    the program by agreeing to consider guaranteed
    admission to graduates earning an associates
    degree and passing the PRAXIS I (VCCS news
    release 10/22/03)
  • The dream a uniform community college
    curriculum seamlessly transferable to all
    approved teacher preparation programs at
    four-year institutions in Virginia
  • The reality
  • Guaranteed admission to the institution for the
    student who takes the prescribed courses for that
    institution.
  • Equal consideration with native students for
    financial aid.
  • Students complete letter of intent early in
    community college experience.
  • Around ten of the institutions are participating.

    the Environment, Life Science
  • Science courses that good for pre-teachers are
    good for all non-majors.

Education Courses, Curricula, and Club
  • Student Development 107 Career Education
    (Teaching) combines required college
    orientation course with an orientation to the
    teaching profession. Includes a 10 clock-hour
    observation field experience (2 credits)
  • Education 200 Introduction to Teaching As a
    Profession includes foundations of education,
    historical perspectives, curriculum and
    instruction, teacher as professional. Includes a
    40 clock-hour hands-on internship (3 credits)
  • Teacher Preparation Specialization Curricula
    within each of the Transfer Associate Degrees in
    Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Science are in
    final stages Algebra Add-On Endorsement Courses
  • Student Virginia Education Association (SVEA)
    Club provides opportunities for student
    leadership, attendance at conferences, workshops,
    and seminars, participation in service projects.
    Affiliation with the VEA and NEA allows for
    liability insurance while in field experience
    setting.

    in the final planning stages
  • 150,000 NCLB Improving Teacher Quality State
    Grant Awarded to Reynolds for preparing area
    paraprofessionals for the ETS Parapro Test
  • Pre-test, diagnosis in each of reading,
    writing, and mathematics, follow-up refresher and
    in-depth courses in each area if needed
  • More than 400 area paraprofessionalss tested
  • Also included tuition support for
    paraprofessionals interested in college
    coursework
  • On-campus half-day follow-up sessions
