Project Objective
  • Deliver the maximum amount of electrical energy
to an electrical motor using energy generated and
stored during 15 minutes of sunlight on a 120 W
    solar panel.
  • We do not expect to get full efficiency from the
solar panel so we based our calculations on
obtaining about 80 W from the panels.
  • E P t
  • E 80W (15mins 60 sec)
  • E 72,000 Joules

4
Why Compressed Air?
  • Tremendously large potential energy storage per
    unit volume
  • E p V - energy is directly proportional to
    pressure
  • Simple, effective method
  • Inexpensive design

5
Compressed Air The Plan
  • The energy generated from the solar panel will be
used to power the air compressor.
  • This compressor will fill a 30 gallon air tank
which will serve as our energy storage device.

6
The Plan cont.
  • Using the air stored in the tank, we will release
it across a turbine that will cause the turbine
to rotate the alternator and thus generate power.
  • The power will then be converted to electrical
energy and will be used to operate a motor.

Materials
  • Air compressor
  • Air Tank
  • Fan / Turbine
  • Fan Housing
  • Alternator
  • Solar Panel - provided

11
Why a 30 gallon tank?
  • To calculate the size of the tank, an ideal
pressure needed to be chosen. Using 90psi(p) as
the pressure goal and Energy Stored(W), the
volume(V) of the air tank can be found by

12
Fan / Turbine
  • Blow air across turbine
  • Alternator will be hooked to this to receive the
    energy

13
Alternator
  • High output at low RPM
  • Easily connected to turbine
  • Small, low friction

Why Should You Vote For Us???
  • Our project uses proven technology
  • Its simple to build and operate
  • The storage potential is extremely long term.
  • Time and Friction have Minimal effect
  • The Bottom Line is Vote for our projectits the
    BEST solution
