Title: Bubble Bomb

1
Bubble Bomb
  • How I was able to pop a plastic bag with the
    power of fizz!
  • By Student A

2
Question..
  • Can I pop a plastic bag by using elements that
    are known to me?

3
Questions.
  • Using my background knowledge about chemical
reactions, I know that vinegar and baking soda
mixed with water can become explosive because I
know that this will make carbon dioxide, a gas
that will react with the baking soda.
  • But, how much of each element will I need in
order for the chemicals to pop the plastic bag?

4
Hypothesis
  • I know that if I mix one teaspoon of vinegar with
baking soda I will get a small volcano eruption.
  • A plastic bag is much stronger.
  • I hypothesize that I will need 2 tablespoons of
baking soda, 1 cup of vinegar and 1/2 cup of
water to blow up the bag.

5
Procedure.
  • First, I collected all the materials I would
    need
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cup
  • Zipper lock plastic bags

6
Next,
  • Next, I had to have a place where I could make a
mess and let the bag explode.
  • (My mom wouldnt let me use the kitchen so I
went into the shower stall and closed the shower
    door.)

7
Procedure/details..
  • After I collected all the materials, I put the
    following together in this order
  • Pour 1 cup vinegar in plastic bag
  • Pour 1/2 cup of water into plastic bag
  • Quickly pour the baking soda in 2 tablespoons
already measured out and in a beaker.
  • Quickly zip bag
  • Shake the bag a little
  • Put bag on shower floor and stand back!

8
What happened?
  • Data collected
  • Bags- It took awhile to find the right bag. Some
of the bags leaked so I had to test the zipper
lock bags by putting water into it.
  • Baking Soda-When I put the baking soda into the
mixture, it immediately fizzed up to where I
    couldnt zip the bag!
  • So, I had to put the baking soda in a Kleenex and
wrap it up and then put it in the bag. That
    helped delay the reaction!

9
Results.
  • The ingredients that I hypothesized that would
break the bag worked! It popped in the shower
    after 35 seconds of fizzing.
  • I did have to change how I put the baking soda in
the bag by wrapping it in Kleenex.

10
Conclusions..
  • The bubbles in the bag filled with carbon
dioxide, a gas that forms when the vinegar reacts
    with the baking soda.
  • The amounts of those 2 elements were needed to
have enough force to pop the plastic bag.

11
Questions I have
  • Would this same mixture be able to blow up foil?
Or, would it take more baking soda?
  • Would I be able to unclog a sink with this
    mixture?
