Title: Earths Oceans

1
Earths Oceans
  • Pull out some paper for notes

2
Earths Oceans
  • What is the biggest difference between Earth and
    Marsor Mercury?
  • Oceans! 71 of the earth is covered by oceans.
  • These oceans greatly regulate the environment.

3
Divisions of the Global Ocean
  • The largest Ocean Is the Pacific Ocean.
  • The Atlantic is about ½ the size of the Pacific.
  • The others areIndian OceanArctic
    OceanSouthern Ocean

4
How did the Oceans form?
  • Recall that the Continents move about around the
globe and have changed the oceans greatly.

5
How did the Oceans form?
  • About 4.5 Billion years ago, there were no
    oceans.
  • As the earth Cooled, Water condensed out of the
atmosphere and rain filled the first oceans.

6
Characteristics of Ocean Water
  • Ocean Water is Salty 85 of the dissolved solids
are Sodium and Chlorine Ions (Salt)
  • This comes from the water cycle. Rain falls on
the continent, dissolves salt, and deposits it in
    the ocean.

7
Climate Effects Salinity
  • Some parts of the ocean have more salt than
    others.
  • Warmer Drier climates Higher Salinity.
  • Cooler Wetter climates Lower Salinity
  • The Temperature effects evaporation rates.

8
Water Movement Effects Salinity
  • Where rivers run into the ocean also makes lower
    salinity conditions.
  • Ocean currents can change salinity.
  • The presence of bays that let water stand can
    increase salinity too.

9
Temperature Zones
  • Temperature of the water decreases with depth.
  • Surface Zone Temp drops slowly near the surface
  • Thermocline Temp drops sharply
  • Deep Zone Temperature steadies at its coldest
    temperature.

10
The Ocean Water Cycle
  • Evaporation Water moves off the ocean.
  • Condensation Clouds form and move over the
    continents.
  • Precipitation Rain and Snow falls, eventually
running down rivers to the ocean.
  • The cycle repeats.

11
The Global Thermostat
  • Water can hold allot of heat.
  • Water is slow to change temperature, as compared
    to land.
  • Because of this the earths temperature is
    regulated.
  • Without this the earth could vary between 100C in
the day and -100C at night.
