Instructional Decision Making
Session 2 Objectives
Each participant will
  • Know the role of assessment in Instructional
    Decision Making.

2. Know the definition of each type of
assessment.
  • 3. Know when and how each assessment type is
    used in Instructional Decision Making.

4
Instructional Decision Making
The decisions we make about instruction are only
as good as the data upon which they are based.
5
Instructional Decision Making
The data obtained from the assessment of student
learning is what drives the Instructional
Decision Making process.
6
Instructional Decision Making
There are three types of assessment classroom
teachers use to inform their instruction
Screening
Diagnostic
Formative
7
Instructional Decision Making

Summative Assessment
8
Instructional Decision Making
Screening Diagnostic Formative

Each is relevant for PreK through 12th grade.
Each is aligned with standards and benchmarks.
9
Instructional Decision Making
Screening
Purpose Identifies high and low performing
students whose needs are not being met.
Questions Answered How are students responding
to core instruction? Which students are in need
of additional assessment?
10
Instructional Decision Making
Screening provides data to
a. inform instruction
  • b. help school staff determine if there are
    systemic educational needs and
  • c. guide decisions about supplemental or
intensive instruction for those students whose
    needs are not being met.

11
Results of Screening (40 students)
Instructional Decision Making
All these students will receive core instruction.
In addition, 7 will need supplemental instruction
and 3 will need intensive instruction.
12
Instructional Decision Making
Diagnostic Assessment
Purpose Helps to determine why the academic
and/or behavioral needs are occurring.
Identifies what the student needs to learn.
Diagnostic assessment takes a deeper look.
13
Diagnostic Assessment
Instructional Decision Making
Diagnostic assessment may be needed to determine
which students need supplemental instruction and
which need intensive. It is a deeper look to
determine what specific instruction is needed.
14
Instructional Decision Making
Diagnostic assessment is administered to students
who exceed or fall below the learning
expectations on the screening measures. Results
are used to design instructional plans to meet
individual needs.
15
Instructional Decision Making
Formative Assessment
Purpose Identifies if students are making
progress. Identifies if instruction needs
adjustment.
Questions Answered Are the students making
progress compared to self, peers, and
standard? Is an instructional change needed?
