Thumbnail sketch of status
  • Optical Assembly complete optical testing of the
camera planned to start this week
  • Cold testing with an engineering mosaic of MIT/LL
chips in the dewar has started.
  • Science Array with 8 epi CCDs starts assembly
    this week
  • We have fabricated all major parts of the optical
train with the exception of grating sliders 34
sliders 34 will complete in April
  • Major systems are being integrated onto
    structure starting testing (slitmask system,
    grating system, filter wheel.)
  • Calibration and FC light sources are last systems
    needing design

    1.41

10
Predicted Pre-Ship Review Date
  • Optimistic current slip does not increase- 4
    weeks 12/4/00
  • Conservative critical path inefficiency factor
  • remains constant (1.51)
    15 weeks 4/4/01

Camera Test Stand
23
ORA Respace
  • Adjustments to multiplet spacings were less than
    0.012 in
  • Respace design has rms image diameters 0.18 -0.20
arcsec. This is 20 better than error budget to
this point (not all errors yet included)

24
Camera
  • Testing plan starts next week
  • Image size and aberrations
  • Interferometric tests

25
Detectors
  • Eight science-grade epi CCDs are in hand for
    first science mosaic.
  • Recent setbacks on Lot 14 high-rho CCDs have
    occurred supply is unclear

26
Dewar
  • Cooling test with dead mosaic completed
    successfully
  • Warm test with engineering mosaic completed
    successfully
  • Science mosaic with 8 epi CCDs is under
    construction
  • Cold test with engineering mosaic is starting
  • Read out noise is low
  • Electrical crosstalk is low
  • Recent leak will cause a slip of 1 week
  • Two CCDs do not work cause unknown
  • RTV window seal outgasses water onto CCDs seal
    will have to be replaced

27
Dewar

28

CCD controller attached to dewar
29
Grating System
  • Two of 4 sliders complete and installed
  • Testing of grating slide drive in progress
  • Sliders 34 complete by end of March
  • Grating installation fixture nearly complete

30
Grating System
Sliders 12
31
Grating system
Drive System
32
Filter Wheel
  • Fabricated
  • Assembly is in progress

33
Structure
  • Rotation tests indicate that drive hardware is
    extremely good
  • Drive servo system and software are planned to
    begin in May

34
Collimator
  • Cell complete and fitted into DEIMOS structure
  • Collimator is aluminized

35
Tent Mirror
  • Attachment points have been installed on mirror
  • Piezo hardware exists
  • Mirror to be aluminized in April
  • Dummy mirror to be installed in DEIMOS for
    testing in May

36
Tent Mirror
37
Shutter
  • Assembled and tested
  • Plan to change out air cylinders to ones similar
    to ESI

38
Calibration System
  • Currently in design phase
  • System will be very simple with bulbs and
reflectors in the forward part of instrument and
    power supplies in electronics lockers
  • Ne, Ar, He, HgCd, possibly Kr and Xe, plus quartz
    continuum lamp

39
FC Light System
  • Have fibers and plan to start testing in April
  • Requires integration with the slit mask holder
    design (April)
  • Light source is two Cu-Ar lamps (one for backup)

40
TV System
  • Design complete
  • Very similar to system used in ESI
  • Fabrication scheduled to begin in April, complete
    in May

41
Software
  • Continuing delays due to ESI and HIRES exposure
    meter
  • Kibrick working on signal chain, not software
  • Mosaic descrambing software is written
  • RTD image display tool will probably be DS9 NOAO
    RTD not needed

42
Site
  • Bi-weekly participation in team meetings
  • Channels for rails in right Naysmith platform are
    complete
  • Modifications have not yet been made to cable
wrap on telescope (Kyle and Mark have drawings)
  • Table of contents for a Lick/CARA interface
    document have been developed

43
Web Site
  • Comprehensive design is in progress inspired by
    ESI
  • Test Data section is now archiving all test
    results in standard format

44
(No Transcript)
45
Shipping
  • Main structure can be shipped by Matson will
    require custom crate.
  • Will likely need separate marine container for
fixtures and other large heavy parts not attached
    to main structure for shipping
  • We will air-freight optics and most electronics,
    as did ESI

46
Concerns
  • Ice condensation in dewar new mount for dewar
    window
  • Acquisition of hi-rho devices number and
    schedule
  • Stages and mechanisms needing extensive rework
  • Flexure
  • Software scheduling
  • Testing personnel
  • Ghost reflections
  • purchase of new blank for element 5
