Ice-Age Scotland
  • Learning Intentions
  • To understand the importance of ice in shaping
    the Scottish Landscape.
  • To understand the concept of an Ice-Age.
  • To name and explain features of glaciation.

3
Discussion
  • Do you know what an Ice Age is?
  • Ice Age - a period in time when there was a
long-term reduction in the temperature of the
Earths surface and atmosphere, resulting in an
expansion of ice sheets and glaciers.
  • How do you think Scotland has been affected by
    the ice?

4
Watch the following movie clip
  • Things to consider
  • How has Scotland been affected by Ice?
  • When did the last Ice Age occur?
  • What are some of the features created by ice in
    Scotland?

  • When did the last Ice Age occur?
  • What are some of the features created by ice in
    Scotland?

7
Activity
  • Read pages 8 - 10

8
You will learn three features of glaciation
  • U-shaped Valley
  • Corrie
  • Corrie Loch

9
U-shaped Valley
10
The formation of a U-shaped Valley
  • The U-shaped valley begins as a V-shaped valley
    carved by a river.
  • When a glacier flows through this V-shaped valley
the power of ice scrapes away at the surface
widening, deepening and steepening the valley.

12
Corrie and Corrie Loch
  • A circular hollow in the side of a mountain

13
Formation of Corrie
  • Snow Gathers in a hollow in the mountainside.
  • Overtime this snow compacts into ice to form a
    glacier.
  • Under gravity the glacier starts to move down the
mountainside, due to the shape of the hollow it
    curves.
  • As it does this it steepens the back of the
hollow and deepens the base creating a larger
    hollow in the mountainside.
  • The shape almost resembles an armchair steep
    back with two arm rests!

14
  • When the glacier has melted, the hollow which is
    left fills with water.
  • This is called a corrie loch or tarn.

Activity
  • Collect the Glaciation features sheet.
  • Copy the diagrams into your jotter.
  • Select the correct labels to ANNOTATE your
diagrams. Write the labels beside the diagram and
draw an arrow to the part of the diagram it is
    referring to.
  • If you finish before the rest of the class, start
the extension questions on Page 10.

Drawing and annotating diagrams is an important
geographic skill.
