Title: Food Preparation

1
Food Preparation Storage
  • Presenter Adia Gibbens
  • Media Asst Laurel Thornton
  • Section 101

2
How did the archeologists study the preparation
and storage of food?
  • Direct observation of artifacts
  • Comparing artifacts with contemporary items

3
Observation
  • Archeologists found a cast iron stove that had
coal and mica present, indicating that the stove
was disposed of intact or nearly intact

4
Comparison
Shards of a cup found were very Similar to a
contemporary tea cup. Insinuations can be made
that the shards were part of a tea cup, but
nothing can be definite.

Usage
  • Utensils and other forms of food storage
  • Were used widely throughout Kirilovka.
  • Pictured right is a baby bottle.
  • The baby bottle usage could have been to feed a
baby either human or an animal.
  • It was probably used for babies without a mother
or a mother that was unable to produce milk on
    her own.

More Usage
  • The cutlery pictured left was the only cutlery
    found at the Kirlovka site.
  • Not much is known as to why such utensils were
    not found/used within the village.

Even More Usage
  • The cast iron pot to the right was found fully
    intact.
  • Although labels were erased it bares a striking
resemblance to a Doukhobor Russian immigrant soup
    pot.
  • This suggests that it is a soup pot though one
    can never be sure.

Use-Lives
In general, the Doukhobors reused manufactured
goods for storage of food. Objects like tin cans
(resembling the one on the left) were first
brought to the site with a good stored inside but
after the good was emptied, the could be reused
as a salt shaker.
9
Social Importance of Food and preparation
  • Doukhobors believed in social equality. Within
the Kirilovka site, there was one area with a
large concentration of cooking supplies. This
could imply that the community ate together,
making nobody better or worse than the other.
