Need
  • Responsible leadership is critical to human
    development, commerce, and community
  • Organizations and their leaders are facing
    criticism for unethical management practices and
    poorly functioning governance structures
  • Corporations are being called on to fundamentally
    change their business practices and develop a new
    business ethos educational institutions have a
    responsibility to contribute to such efforts
  • The Center for Responsible Leadership and
    Governance promotes values-based leadership,
    ethical decision-making, and quality stakeholder
    relationships through education, scholarship and
    research, training and development, and outreach

  • The Center builds on Villanovas Catholic,
    Augustinian heritage that emphasizes the moral
    and ethical dimensions of leadership
  • Ethics and Social Responsibility is central to
    VU and CF strategic goals and initiatives

  • Goal Integrate current and newly developed
    insights and best practices of responsible
    leadership into curriculum
  • Incorporate responsible leadership in
    undergraduate, MBA, and EMBA education
  • Establish honors social responsibility course
  • Support student participation in Business Ethics
    Fortnight (Ethics Case Competition)
  • Sponsor guest lectures and presentations on
    responsible leadership (Tyco exec., 12/9/03)
  • Establish internships and other co-op type
    projects related to responsible leadership

  • Goal Undertake theoretical, empirical, and
    practical research, scholarship, and writing on
    responsible leadership and governance

    involve students in research process
  • Develop working paper series and seminars
  • Invest in distinctive research projects related
    to responsible leadership and governance that
    raises research profile of CF and VU

  • Goal Build on scholarship and corporate
    relationships to develop/offer customized
    training programs and other services
  • Offer a web-based Leadership Inventory and
    Relationship Management survey to assess
    leadership and relationship management
  • Offer the Business Capabilities Inventory to VU
    alumni and other universities
  • Evaluate Board and committee composition
  • Assess stakeholder relationships

Outreach and Recognition
  • Goal Build relationship and reputation with
    regional/national organizations and sponsor
    programs responsive to their needs
  • Build professional website and develop a presence
    in media and other outlets
  • Hold major conference in Fall, 2004 on
    Responsible Leadership and Governance Meeting
    the Challenge for Change
  • Build relationships with organizations and
    investigate issues of mutual interest

Center Structure and Resources
  • Director, Associates, and student support drawn
    from existing resource pool
  • Close cooperation with CF ESR Committee and
    University Ethics Program
  • Advisory Council (Herb Aspbury, Chair) to include
    senior VU and outside leaders
  • Leveraging existing strengths and relationships
    of University and individuals
  • Limited seed funding from Springer Chair

Future Plans
  • Continue to leverage Center to support CF and VU
    strategic goals
  • Broaden pool of contributors/collaborators
  • Seek Center and Chair endowments as part of VU
    Capital Campaign
  • Use Center as focus for range of initiatives
    directed toward students, alumni, parents,
    employers, community, other stakeholders
