Gods Providence
  • Will God care for this woman who is a Moabite?

4
Gods Providence
  • Will God care for this woman who is a Moabite?
  • This is a woman who has put her trust in the God
    of Israelthe God of Naomi!

5
Your God will be my God
  • (Ruth 116 NKJV) But Ruth said "Entreat me not
to leave you, Or to turn back from following
after you For wherever you go, I will go And
wherever you lodge, I will lodge Your people
shall be my people, And your God, my God.

Gods Providence
  • Will God care for this woman who is a Moabite?
  • This is a woman who has put her trust in the God
    of Israelthe God of Naomi!
  • God is a God Who looks on the heart!

7
the LORD looks at the heart."
  • (1 Sam 167 NKJV) But the LORD said to Samuel,
"Do not look at his appearance or at the height
of his stature, because I have refused him. For
the Lord does not see as man sees for man looks
at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at
    the heart."

8
The Story of Boaz
  • (Ruth 21 NKJV) There was a relative of Naomi's
husband, a man of great wealth, of the family of
    Elimelech. His name was Boaz.

9
An so everything is in place!
  • (Ruth 21 NKJV) There was a relative of Naomi's
husband, a man of great wealth, of the family of
    Elimelech. His name was Boaz.
  • Hes a relative
  • He is rich
  • He will fall in love.
  • His name will be recorded and remembered.

10
Ruth has a plan
  • (Ruth 22 NKJV) So Ruth the Moabitess said to
Naomi, "Please let me go to the field, and glean
heads of grain after him in whose sight I may
find favor." And she said to her, "Go, my
    daughter."

11
The Law of Gleaning
  • (Lev 199-10 NKJV) 'When you reap the harvest of
your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners
of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings
of your harvest. 10 'And you shall not glean
your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape
of your vineyard you shall leave them for the
poor and the stranger I am the LORD your God.

12
The Law of Gleaning
  • (Lev 1910 NKJV) 'And you shall not glean your
vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of
your vineyard you shall leave them for the poor
and the stranger I am the LORD your God.
  • Ruth was the poor and the stranger, so what is
this? him in whose sight I may find favor."
  • It may simply be a way of realizing it is still a
    gift still find(ing) favor."
  • Still someones kindness.

13
Ruth finds Boaz field
  • (Ruth 23 NKJV) Then she left, and went and
gleaned in the field after the reapers. And she
happened to come to the part of the field
belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of
    Elimelech.

14
Ruth 24 (NKJV)
  • Now behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to
the reapers, "The LORD be with you!" And they
answered him, "The LORD bless you!"

15
Thoughtful Words
  • Boaz was an involved owner
  • He was overseeing the work.
  • He was kind in his words to his reapers.
  • They in turn were kind and respectful to him.
  • Ruth 24 (NKJV) Now behold, Boaz came from
Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, "The LORD be
with you!" And they answered him, "The LORD bless
    you!"

16
He takes note of Ruth
  • (Ruth 25 NKJV) Then Boaz said to his servant
who was in charge of the reapers, "Whose young
    woman is this?"

17
Ruth is Identified
  • (Ruth 26 NKJV) So the servant who was in charge
of the reapers answered and said, "It is the
young Moabite woman who came back with Naomi from
    the country of Moab.

18
Ruth 27 (NKJV)
  • "And she said, 'Please let me glean and gather
after the reapers among the sheaves.' So she came
and has continued from morning until now, though
she rested a little in the house."

19
Ruth 27 (NKJV)
  • "And she said, 'Please let me glean and gather
after the reapers among the sheaves.' So she came
and has continued from morning until now, though
she rested a little in the house."
  • She was courteous and politeAsking, not taking
    for granted.
  • She is hard working and conscientious

20
Boaz Protection
  • (Ruth 28 NKJV) Then Boaz said to Ruth, "You
will listen, my daughter, will you not? Do not go
to glean in another field, nor go from here, but
stay close by my young women.

21
Boaz Protection
  • (Ruth 29 NKJV) "Let your eyes be on the field
which they reap, and go after them. Have I not
commanded the young men not to touch you? And
when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink
from what the young men have drawn."

22
Boaz Protection
  • Thats how to stay on my property.
  • I have commanded them not to harm you or take
    advantage of you.
  • Im providing water for you to drink.
  • (Ruth 29 NKJV) "Let your eyes be on the field
which they reap, and go after them. Have I not
commanded the young men not to touch you? And
when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink
from what the young men have drawn."

23
Humility Appreciation
  • (Ruth 210 NKJV) So she fell on her face, bowed
down to the ground, and said to him, "Why have I
found favor in your eyes, that you should take
notice of me, since I am a foreigner?"

24
Boaz Knew about Ruth
  • (Ruth 211 NKJV) And Boaz answered and said to
her, "It has been fully reported to me, all that
you have done for your mother-in-law since the
death of your husband, and how you have left your
father and your mother and the land of your
birth, and have come to a people whom you did not
    know before.

25
"The LORD repay your work
  • (Ruth 212 NKJV) "The LORD repay your work, and
a full reward be given you by the LORD God of
Israel, under whose wings you have come for
    refuge."

26
"The LORD repay your work
  • (Ruth 212 NKJV) "The LORD repay your work, and
a full reward be given you by the LORD God of
Israel, under whose wings you have come for
    refuge."
  • But notice how the Lords blessings were carried
out! It was through the kindness of Boaz that
she found the blessings of the Lord

27
May his blessings continue.
  • (Ruth 213 NKJV) Then she said, "Let me find
favor in your sight, my lord for you have
comforted me, and have spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not like one of your
    maidservants."

28
May his blessings continue.
  • She asks for, and hopes for Boaz continued
favor, based on his kindness thus far, but she is
keenly aware that she is a foreigner. I am not
    like one of your maidservants."
  • (Ruth 213 NKJV) Then she said, "Let me find
favor in your sight, my lord for you have
comforted me, and have spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not like one of your
    maidservants."

29
Boaz Provides food for her.
  • (Ruth 214 NKJV) Now Boaz said to her at
mealtime, "Come here, and eat of the bread, and
dip your piece of bread in the vinegar." So she
sat beside the reapers, and he passed parched
grain to her and she ate and was satisfied, and
    kept some back.

30
Boaz Provides food for her.
  • Boaz has gone far beyond the law regarding
gleaning. I find nothing in the law about
providing anything for the gleaners other than
allow them to glean the crops. He provides food
and drink, and apparently enough that she is able
    to take some to Naomi.

31
Beyond Gleaning
  • (Ruth 215-16 NKJV) And when she rose up to
glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, "Let
her glean even among the sheaves, and do not
reproach her. 16 "Also let grain from the
bundles fall purposely for her leave it that she
may glean, and do not rebuke her."

32
Beyond Gleaning
  • (Ruth 215-16 NKJV) And when she rose up to
glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, "Let
her glean even among the sheaves, and do not
reproach her. 16 "Also let grain from the
bundles fall purposely for her leave it that she
may glean, and do not rebuke her."
  • Let her glean even among the sheaves This was
a privilege for no person should glean till the
sheaves were all bound, and the shocks set up.

33
She had a good day!
  • (Ruth 217 NKJV) So she gleaned in the field
until evening, and beat out what she had gleaned,
and it was about an ephah of barley.

34
She had a good day!
  • (Ruth 217 NKJV) So she gleaned in the field
until evening, and beat out what she had gleaned,
and it was about an ephah of barley.
  • Today, we would probably say she thrashed it.

35
She had a good day!
  • (Ruth 217 NKJV) So she gleaned in the field
until evening, and beat out what she had gleaned,
and it was about an ephah of barley.
  • A Hebrew measure of three pecks and three pints,
or according to others, of seven gallons and four
    pints
  • Bushel n. A dry measure, containing eight
    gallons, or four pecks.
  • An ephah is almost a bushel

36
Take home box for Naomi
  • (Ruth 218 NKJV) Then she took it up and went
into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she
had gleaned. So she brought out and gave to her
what she had kept back after she had been
    satisfied.

37
Take home box for Naomi
  • (Ruth 218 NKJV) Then she took it up and went
into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she
had gleaned. So she brought out and gave to her
what she had kept back after she had been
    satisfied.
  • (Ruth 214 NKJV) So she sat beside the reapers,
and he passed parched grain to her and she ate
and was satisfied, and kept some back.

38
Naomi is impressed
  • (Ruth 219 NKJV) And her mother-in-law said to
her, "Where have you gleaned today? And where did
you work? Blessed be the one who took notice of
you." So she told her mother-in-law with whom she
had worked, and said, "The man's name with whom I
    worked today is Boaz."

39
Naomi blesses Boaz
  • (Ruth 220 NKJV) Then Naomi said to her
daughter-in-law, "Blessed be he of the LORD, who
has not forsaken His kindness to the living and
the dead!" And Naomi said to her, "This man is a
relation of ours, one of our close relatives."

40
Ruth 221 (NKJV)
  • Ruth the Moabitess said, "He also said to me,
'You shall stay close by my young men until they
    have finished all my harvest.'"

41
Servants may be better
  • Ruth 221 (NKJV) Ruth the Moabitess said, "He
also said to me, 'You shall stay close by my
young men until they have finished all my
    harvest.'"
  • (Ruth 221 NASB) Then Ruth the Moabitess said,
"Furthermore, he said to me, 'You should stay
close to my servants until they have finished all
    my harvest.'"

42
  • (Ruth 222 NKJV) And Naomi said to Ruth her
daughter-in-law, "It is good, my daughter, that
you go out with his young women, and that people
do not meet you in any other field."

43
Meaning of people do not meet you
  • More literally
  • In Plain English
  • (Ruth 222 NASB) And Naomi said to Ruth her
daughter-in-law, "It is good, my daughter, that
you go out with his maids, lest others fall upon
    you in another field."
  • (Ruth 222 NCV) But Naomi said to her
daughter-in-law Ruth, "It is better for you to
continue working with his women workers. If you
work in another field, someone might hurt you."

44
Ruth 223 (NKJV)
  • So she stayed close by the young women of Boaz,
to glean until the end of barley harvest and
wheat harvest and she dwelt with her
    mother-in-law.

45
So What is Implied?
  • Ruth 223 (NKJV) So she stayed close by the young
women of Boaz, to glean until the end of barley
harvest and wheat harvest and she dwelt with her
    mother-in-law.
  • until the end of barley harvest -- What then?
  • Thats the next chapter!

46
The Next Chapter
  • The Literal Translation
  • More interpretation
  • (Ruth 31 NKJV) Then Naomi her mother-in-law
said to her, "My daughter, shall I not seek
security for you, that it may be well with you?
  • (Ruth 31 NIV) One day Naomi her mother-in-law
said to her, "My daughter, should I not try to
find a home for you, where you will be well
    provided for?

  • (Acts 1034-35 NKJV) Then Peter opened his mouth
and said "In truth I perceive that God shows no
partiality. 35 "But in every nation whoever
fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by
    Him.
