Title: Discuss how the poet approaches the subject of death in Anne Hathaway and 3 other poems'

1
  • Discuss how the poet approaches the subject of
death in Anne Hathaway and 3 other poems.

2
  • In your introduction you need to name all four
poems and relate them to the question.
  • Now write your introduction
  • Begin with this sentence
  • Anne Hathaway presents the theme of death as a
happy and hopeful one throughout the poem.
    November on the other hand

3
  • Anne Hathaway presents the theme of death as a
happy and hopeful one throughout the poem.
November on the other hand shows a sad and
negative view of death with an old woman being
taken to hospital or an old peoples home. On my
first Sonne is about a father addressing his son
after he has died, which shows a lot of love but
also sorrow and anger at the loss. The Man He
Killed is less personal there is an acceptance
of death as a result of war, however
    incomprehensible.

4
  • Now you need to write your second paragraph. Deal
with Anne Hathaway and how the poet approaches
    death in the poem.
  • Make sure you use an example from the text and
    analyse.
  • P
  • E
  • E

5
  • The joyful aspect of Anne Hathaway comes
across in the line, My living, laughing love
which gives the impression that Shakespeare is
still alive in her memory, the alliteration
adding a lyrical quality to the line.
  • This idea is reinforced by the following phrase,
I hold him in the casket of my widows head.
This shows us that Hathaway does not believe her
husband is buried in a casket, but instead is
kept alive in her head by the very memory of him.

6
  • Next, bring in another poem, using a
    compare/contrast sentence opening such as..
  • In contrast to this.
  • However, in
  • Whereas, in the poem.
  • Talk about November and how it treats the idea
    of death differently.

7
  • In contrast to this, November paints a sad and
negative view of the grandma of John, the
poets friend. This can be seen in her walk from
the car, Grandma taking four short steps to our
two, which shows how frail she is, and the fact
that we have brought her here to die and we know
    it.
  • This is very different to Anne Hathaway as she
has a joyful, loving memory of her husband. She
says his words were shooting stars which fell to
earth as kisses emphasising their passion and
    celebration of their love.

8
  • This is now the central part of your essay
  • So now, write a further point on November
talking about the atmosphere of the poem whilst
    mentioning language choice.
  • Try to incorporate the quotations you use within
    your sentences.

9
  • The atmosphere in November is sad. There is an
acceptance in the poem, that we are all
eventually going to die and that we can say
    nothing to stop it happening.
  • I think the poet is trying to portray that fact
that we cant stop death, just like we cant stop
the evening, falling again. The poet also shows
us that we have to accept death but we often
cant, so we try and numb ourselves with
    alcohol.

10
  • Now relate this back again to Anne Hathaway,
showing that you can compare the two effectively.
  • Use the starting sentence,
  • This is a very different atmosphere and view of
    death to Anne Hathaway, who..

11
  • This is a very different atmosphere and view of
death to Anne Hathaway, who has memories of her
love with her husband and does not think that
death is the end. She remembers the nights they
loved in the second best bed and fantasises of
the times that they made love and he would dive
for pearls which shows how her saw her as a
    treasure.

12
  • Next, introduce your 3rd poem, On my first
Sonne in the context of the question
  • Start with the sentence
  • In On my first Sonne the father feels love for
his son like in Anne Hathaway where she feels
love for her husband. We see this when.

13
  • In On my first Sonne the father feels love for
his son like in Anne Hathaway where she feels
love for her husband. We see this when he calls
his son his right hand which almost makes one
think about Jesus sitting at the right hand of
God this is the highest compliment.
  • He also refers to him as his best piece of
poetrie which again highlights the love he had
for his son, to place him over his genius pieces
of literature as his best creation.

14
  • Now compare with another poem perhaps
November to show how Jonson thinks his time
with his son was lent to him and how the
characters in November realise about how we
should make the best out of our lives.
  • Start with the sentence
  • Although there is strong feeling of love in the
    poem

15
  • Although there is strong feeling of love in the
poem, Jonson is also sad and angry about the
death exacted by fate and he realises that
seven yeeres thowert lent to me was a short
    period of joy.
  • This compares to November in that fact that
the voice in the poem believes that life has to
be lived to its fullest, One thing we have to
get, John, out of this life.

16
  • Now introduce your fourth poem The Man he
    Killed
  • Talk about the differences you can see between it
    and another poem
  • Start with the sentence
  • The atmosphere of The Man he Killed begins
with a sad tone, but then

17
  • The atmosphere of The Man he Killed begins
with a sad tone, but then changes as the man
tries to defend his actions I shot at him as he
at me. He goes further to say that because he
was my foe he had to kill him.
  • This is a form of acceptance about death like in
November. Though he is sad about his foes
death, he does not demonstrate the same level of
love for the departed that we see in Duffy and
    Jonsons poems.

18
  • Now you can conclude your essay, bringing
together all 4 poems and focusing clearly on the
    question again.
  • Begin with the sentence
  • I feel that Anne Hathaway shows us that..This
is like On my first Sonne which also However,
    November is ..
  • In a similar way and in contrast to Duffys
poem, The Man he Killed shows us.

19
  • I feel that Anne Hathaway shows us that we
should love our departed and remember them. This
is like On my first Sonne which also shows the
comparison of the father remembering his son.
However, November is a very final, frank and
philosophical poem that has the acceptance of
death and says that we will all die eventually.
  • In a similar way and in contrast to Duffys
poem, The Man he Killed shows us that death and
war are terrible and that they should be avoided.
This is not the positive tone of Anne Hathaway
    that finds hope in memories.
