Word Processing
  • Word processing the use of computer software to
    enter and edit text.
  • With word processing software such as Word,
    documents such as letters and reports can be
    easily created and edited.

  • To open an existing document, choose Open on the
    File menu or click the Open button on the
    Standard toolbar.

Four Ways to View a Document
  • Normal View simplified layout of the page so
    you can quickly key, edit, and format text.
  • Web Layout View shows how a document will look
    when viewed as a Web page.
  • Print Layout View shows how a document will
    look when it is printed.
  • Outline View displays headings and text in
    outline form.

Saving a File
  • Save As Use Save As when saving a file for the
    first time, saving a file using a different name,
    or saving a file to a new location. Choose Save
    As on the File menu and the Save As dialog box
    appears.
  • Save After you have already saved a file,
    choose Save on the file menu or the Save button
    on the Standard toolbar. This will update the
    file, but does not open the Save As dialog box.

Selecting Text
  • Selecting - highlighting a block of text.
  • For keyboard shortcuts used to select text, see
    Table 1-4 in the student text.
  • Select text by holding down the left button of
    the mouse and dragging the pointer to the end of
    the text that you want to select.

Backspace, Delete, and Overtype Text
  • Backspace key deletes characters to the left of
    the insertion point.
  • Delete key deletes characters to the right of
    the insertion point.
  • Overtype replaces or types over existing text.

Using Undo and Redo
  • Undo reverses recent actions. Click the Undo
    button on the Standard toolbar or choose the Undo
    command from the Edit menu.
  • Redo reverses an Undo action. Click
  • the Redo button on the Standard toolbar or
    choose the Redo command from the Edit menu.

Printing a Document
  • To print a document, choose Print on the File
    menu. The Print dialog box will appear.
  • You can also click the Print button on the
    Standard toolbar or on the Print Preview toolbar.
    The Print dialog box will not appear.

Clipboard
  • Clipboard a temporary storage place in the
    computers memory. The Clipboard is displayed in
    the task pane.

Cutting Text
  • Cut removes selected text from the document and
    places it on the Clipboard.
  • Choose Cut from the Edit menu or the Cut button
    on the Standard toolbar.

Copying Text
  • Copy a copy of the selected text is placed on
    the Clipboard while the original text remains in
    the document.
  • Choose Copy from the Edit menu or the Copy button
    on the Standard toolbar.

Pasting Text
  • Paste text is copied from the Clipboard to the
    location of the insertion point in the document.
  • Choose Paste from the Edit menu or the Paste
    button on the Standard toolbar.

Using Drag and Drop to Move or Copy Text
  • Drag and drop quick method to move text a short
    distance in the text.
  • Move text place mouse pointer on selected text.
    Click and hold down mouse button. Drag text and
    release button where you want the text to appear.
  • Copy text same steps as moving text, but hold
    down Ctrl while dragging.

Print Preview
  • Print allows you to view a document as it will
    appear when it is printed.
  • Choose Print Preview on the File menu or click
    the Print Preview button on the Standard toolbar.

Page Orientation
  • Portrait orientation documents are longer than
    they are wide.
  • Landscape orientation documents are wider than
    they are long.
  • To change the orientation of a document, choose
    Page Setup on the File menu.

  • Word is a word processing program used to create
    documents such as letters, memos, forms, reports,
    and even Web pages.
  • You can view the document screen in Normal View,
    Web Layout View, Print Layout View, and Outline
    View.

  • The key elements of the Normal View screen are
    the Standard and Formatting toolbars, ruler,
    end-of-file marker, insertion point, view
    buttons, and status bar.
  • The insertion point can be placed anywhere within
    the document using the keyboard or mouse.
  • You can speed operations by selecting blocks of
    text.

  • Replace text using Overtype mode.
