A Study of Prehistoric AnimalsSecond Grade
Science
2
The Age of Dinosaurs lasted for 180 million years
and was divided into 3 major periods ofthe
MESOZOIC Era
2. JURASSIC(208-144 MY)
1. TRIASSIC(245-208 MY)
3. CRETACEOUS(144-65 MY)
3
The word dinosaur means
Pteranodon
TERRIBLE LIZARD
4
Meat eating dinosaurs are called
TYLORAYSAURUS
TYRANNOSAURUS REX
CARNIVORES
VELOCIRAPTOR
5
Plant eating dinosaurs are called
CAMARASAURUS
TRICERATOPS
HERBIVORES
STEGOSAURUS
6
Scientists that study dinosaur and other
prehistoric animal fossils are called
PALEONTOLOGISTS WORK AT A SITE IN THE GOBI DESERT
IN CHINA
PALEONTOLOGISTS
7
Dinosaurs existed in many different types of
environments in prehistoric earth
Jungles
Deserts
Forests

The SUPER CONTINENT that separated during
prehistoric times was named PANGAEA.
This land mass split into two smaller land masses
about 150 million years ago. They were named
LAURASIA(North America,Europe, Asia)
This was the way the earth looked some 245
million years ago. As you can see, it was very
different!
GONDWANALAND(South America, Africa, Antarctica)

Many theories exists as to why the
dinosaursbecame extinct 65 millions years ago.
A popular theory is that a giant meteor hit the
earth, causing earthquakes, fires, and a great
cloud of dust and dirt to block the sun.
EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT THE ASTEROID SLAMMED INTO
THE AREA THAT BECAME THE CARRIBEAN SEA
This caused the plant life to die and the
temperatures to cool, so the cold-blooded
dinosaurs had no food or warm climate in order
to survive the environmental change.

Can you draw some of your own dinosaur pictures,
as these students have?
Use your imagination and be creative!
